Turbo 350 No forward gears.

Hey guys: Got a 71 Jimmy w/turbo 350 that shifted fine when parked. Has sat for about 6 months now I have a good solid reverse. No drive gears. Can get wheels to move when rear is jacked up but can stop tires with my hand. Had put in new filter prior to being parked. Any ideas??

Thanks
RC

Did you check the fluid level?

Yep, put all new fluid in it. Has trans cooler. Acts like something is plugged or stuck from sitting. Goes in reverse great.

My experience is when they are low on fluid, they don't shift into forward gears quickly but still have reverse. Your cooler shouldn't be causing any problems. I would check the fluid to see if it is murkie or has h2o in it. Did you put the fluid in before you parked it or after? Check the govenor to see if it is turning freely. You may also see if the check balls in the valve body are ok. (I'm not an expert on transmissions, just my 2cents.)

By the way, welcome to the board from the Pacific Northwest. I didn't notice before that it was your first post. Where are the Selkirk Mountains? Post some pictures of your rig when you get a chance.

Bouncytruck: I appreciate your input. I think you may be right about the valve body. I can work on every part of this but am not a trans man. Selkirk mtns are near Cusick, Ione, Metaline Falls etc. about 70 miles North of Spokane. I will post some pics. Its nice to have a place to talk about these great old rigs. Thanks and have a Merry Xmas. Rick

Change your modulator valve before you get into tearing down the trans Had a problem similar. Had changed the trans filter and fluid. Sat for a while drove it once or twice. It was fine The third time had reverse and 1st no 2nd,3rd,or 4th. Called my dad a mechanic with 50+ yrs experience. Said change your modulator valve if that doesn't fix it then shes gone> LOL

That sounds like a simplier starting point to me. Any idea what would make it die after sitting?
