Saturday pics (5-23) A WORTHLESS recycling project.

Well, Like a fool, I listened to the weather man predicting 50-80% chances of heavy rain and thunderstorms. So I hung around the house and didn't go to Rogersville. Bryan was nice enough to call me and tell me how nice the weather was at the show though (I'll be expecting some photo coverage from you sir!).

So, I didn't go to any shows or cruises but I do have a project that Brian (different Brian) and I finally finished up and nailed down.

It kinda begins with this Cheyenne Super that he brought in a while back.

He used a few pieces of it, sold a few parts and some of it (mainly the bed) sat around in the way. Eventually we threw out the tailgate since we knew it was rough enough that none of us would use it. A piece got cut off to give to So & So for his project. Another piece got used for somebody else's dream. The wheeltubs were pulled and put in the "save" pile...and then we decided it was time to cut up what was left for scrap.

But we saved one final piece.

(Are we morons or what??)

The "Hot Wrench" was employed to give us another opening to work with.

Much better!

Trimmed the lower edge of the bedside just a smidge so we'd have a clear shot at our new opening.

A piece of square tubing with an angled end was just the ticket for driving out the bottom of the stake pocket.

A unibit made quick work of making some holes in the two exposed sides of the stake pocket.

So that a couple pieces of square tubing could be slid all the way up to the top of the bedside and then welded through the holes.

Re: Saturday pics (5-23) A WORTHLESS recycling project.

Of course legs are no good without feet.

And gussets.

To get a headgate to fit our creation we had to trim...

And trim...

And trim!

And then it went together like new money!

(Thanks to Hobart)

Remember earlier when I told you that we threw out the tailgate that went with this bed....Well now that's kickin us where the good lord split us!

I guess it's a good thing that someone had a beater/driver with a gate that was willing to give it up for the cause!

Matches pretty close I think!

A couple of anchors later, and we're ready for business!

Now I've got a cool lil bench that folds up outta the way so I can still get around the pool table!

I've got a step bumper that we were going to mount on it, but after mocking it up it just stuck out to far. I guess if I ever put a new bumper on any of these trucks around here I know where the one I take off is headed!

I did go back and add a 1972 Colorado plate under the gate just for giggles!

Thats a COOL idea. If I had the extra parts I'd build myself one.

Re: Saturday pics (5-23) A WORTHLESS recycling project.

We had been plotting this for at least a year or more...We'd tried and tried to come up with a way to build one that would use an entire truck bench for that extra cushy feel! We came up with lots of ideas that would have worked but they all took up to much space. Another member in the 73-87 posted up some pics of one like this that he built and I knew that we could pull it off. If I ever come up with more space then I can fill, I'd like to build one that's a bit more plush, but for now I'm more then pleased with how this turned out!

A big thanks goes out to Brian/71SEE10 for the shop space/storage and the skills!

I want the next one of these we build to be tall enough to sit at on barstools!

Re: Saturday pics (5-23) A WORTHLESS recycling project.

Asa, on top of cool pictures and a great bench you now can claim the title of the "Shortest Shortbed Owner".Now you need to build another truck to go with that bench/bed.

Yeah Bryan, I had full intentions of being there...But it didn't happen. This is turning in to a less then stellar year for us and auto/truck events. So far I've only done one cruise-in...Missed the Nats for the first time in nine years and missed Rogersville. Hopefully we'll get things going our way soon!

Sure they do! If you scroll back up you'll see that the first pic with the tailgate installed they're off. In the next pic they're on.
