Fuel Pump for Zane's 71

We are going to be putting an L31 in my son's '71. Engine in it is not original and is seized up. Out it comes. The L31 has no mechanical fuel pump considerations. Need suggestions on electric fuel pump. It will remain carbed. I have liked the Mallory Comp pumps, but only used them in racing applications. Anyone have experienced suggestions?

I used a carter electric pump on a gen 6 BBC. It was fairly quiet and seemed to work well. It was supposed to put out around 8psi, I used a regulator but no return line and constantly pushed past the needle and seat on a 750dp.

I have an L31-R in my truck and was running a Holley blue pump with a regulator but it was the noisiest pump you ever heard. I switched to a Holley Mighty-Mite about a year ago and it has worked great so far. They come in different fuel pressure ratings, I got the 4 to 7lbs pump. The part number ends in 427 just in case you are interested.

Thanks. Was considering the holley blue, but would prefer a quite pump. I will check on the mighty-mite.

Do you know what carb you are going with already? If you go Edelbrock, their carbs need a regulator. You could can put on the Edelbrock fuel pump which puts out the correct pressure for their carb.

Probably quadrajet, but maybe a holley. Have both. Won't be an edelbrock. Looking at the Mr. Gasket pump with regulator. Reviews say it is quiet.

I would purchase the Holley Mighty Mite instead of that Mr.gasket pump. They look similar but the Holley is made in the USA and approved for diesel & ethanol. Mr. Gasket is cheap Chinese junk. I used mine for 3 years without a single issue before I switched to EFI. All inline pumps are a bit noisy, I couldn't hear the Holley over my exhaust.

Re: Fuel Pump for Zane's 71

Any ideas on where to pull power for an electric pump? I will use an oil pressure switch as a safety. I am coming up short on the switched power source. The engine wiring harness is new with the HEI pink wire. I am thinking about pulling a relay off this wire. I would run a wire from the pink through the oil switch, to the relay. The pump power would come from the fender terminal, to a fuse, through the relay to the pump.

Thoughts or better ideas? I think the power for the pump is solid. Just not sure about powering the relay from the pink wire.

Re: Fuel Pump for Zane's 71

I have a Mallory 130 (I think) with an Edlebrock bilet regulator in my Burban. The pump is quieter than my air compressor, but you can hear it. I am pretty sure I could quiet it down if I unbolted if and isolated it from the frame. At times you can hear the regulator cycling. I am using a fuel pump controller from Revolution Electronics that I am happy with. All of these are in my WMB thread below. ( but spread out on different pages. Sorry). I'm not a fan of adding things to the ignition circuit as at some point they will fail and may take out your ignition at the same time.
