Bed covers

Does anybody know if a bed cover from a 73 and up truck work on our trucks? I haven't measured one to see, but they must be close.

Bed Cover

I don't know if a '73 cover would work on ours, but I went ahead and spent the money on one from Gaylord's Lids. Their website is www.gaylordslids.com.

It will cost a little more, but the quality and the fit of the lid is GREAT! Hope this helps...

I don't have any pics yet. I'm about 90% done with the truck and do not want to drive it until it's totally done.

The cover is fiberglass, has two large hinges located on the bed close to the cab, and a carpeted underside. It also has locks on both sides towards the rear and a light to install underneath the lid. It opens easily and flows GREAT with the lines on the truck (not big and bulky like some I've seen). I'm very pleased with it. I think it was custom made, but I'm not SURE on that (meaning that they don't just make dozens of them like they would for later model trucks). It cost around $1100 with shipping and all, but it's a GREAT looking bedcover.

As soon as I get some pics, I'll try to figure out how to post them. lol

If you need anything else, I'll be happy to give you any info on this lid I can. Like I said, costs quite a bit, but it's a great lid for OUR trucks.

That looks exactly like mine. I LOVE the way it fits on the bed! I'm going to try to attach a pic of mine taken in September. Which strand would be the best to put it on?

You can also get the Gaylord's with the black seal on the inside of the cover lip, that way there is no black line at the seam. The one on my short box fits perfectly.

I had a tonneau cover on my 80 Silverado. It was about 1.5" longer and wider than it would need to be for my 69. There is enough extra there that I am going to make a plywood lid covered in the tonneau cover material.

I believe from talking to people and looking in catalogs the the beds are at least diferent widths so the 73 doesn't fit properly, I think its wider than a 67-72.

First off, thanks for the input. My question got answered. As far as spendind $1100 for the cover goes though, I guess if I had the money for that, I would probably finish sanding the body, replace the fenders, the dash pad, the heater control levers, carpet, seat belts, any of the other 100 misc. items left to do. But I guess after I finally get to that point and have it painted like all one color, then a very nice fiberglass cover on the bed is going to make it look better than I imagined.

Thanks again, I can't wait to get to this point,

HG

checkmate bed fiberglass and aluminum cover. cost roughly around 500 with shipping to northern california. love the flush look, i hate the over the edge look, it ruins the fine lines of these beds.

I have a Chevrolet slim line cover for a 73' up and it hangs off about two inches on each side. Also it is a little longer, if you put it right on the tailgate then it rubs the cab a little.

jhwkns - nice cover, good lines. what did you use? Do you have a materials list? Did you use dual action locks, what hinges? All the good stuff. (Sorry about all the questions) Love the cover. Good job

I'm a carpenter by trade, so my first choice for materials was something I was familar with. I made the cover out of MDX (what it is commonly called) It's an exterior grade medium density fiberboard. I joined two pieces together in the center with a tenon of 1/4 inch hardboard, and reinforced the bottom with some hardwood cleats for integrity. It's hinged on common door hinges half of which are welded to the bed front, and the other half attached to the MDX with T-nuts and screws. I used common cabinet cam locks to secure it to the post pockets. I routed a radius on the edge that matched the bedsides. Although I haven't done it yet I plan to cover it with white vinyl upholstery fabric. It's somewhat heavy ( 80-90 lbs.), but very sturdy. I think it looks pretty good for a homemade cover. People always ask where I bought it.
