Re: My 42 Project

I have been looking for about a year and have not won any on ebay or seen any good ones on craigslist. I still think the ford ones if you cut the square part at the running board it might work. You are doing great to have that many sets.
I heard that the 37-8 fenders are wider because of the narrower bed.

I think the 37-8 fenders have a style line around the wheel opening, but are the same width as 41-46, I believe its the 39-40 that are wider, you can usually spot them by the tiny little tailgates with the script chevrolet on them. I know where a 39-40 bed is with fenders but its on a different truck and cant be separated, well, by the owner anyway. I could buy the whole thing and split it I guess.

I have three cabs, three extra doors, four front clips, four beds (including what I think is a 1940 gmc steel floor bed), three sets of running boards but only 2.5 sets of fenders. I can go buy this truck with the 40 fenders, but really all I need is the fenders, not trying to be the illuminated collector.

funny story about your ford fender idea, I bought the single passenger fender I have from a guy who I saw in a craigslist ad that had a bunch of fenders hanging from the rafters, I asked if he had any 41-46 and he said "dunno, come look". this is the complete 41 he had, it was actually an older (40?) cab with the 46 front clip and a 46 long bed on a 50 chassis. you can see some of the fenders hanging that I spotted in the ad

I went and looked and I thought I found a pair but the drivers side had a spare dimple in it and on closer inspection was a 40 ford, so it fooled me. I took a picture of the running board attaching area because I had no idea what it was till I got home and looked up what it was.

I bet you are right, only the truly cognoscenti would spot it.

Re: My 42 Project

I have noticed that when the engine is running it smells a little rich. I checked the carb and did not realize I had put a 1407 Edelbrock which is a 750 cfm. Way too much for a 305. So did a little research and found out that the holley 1850 600 cfm car has vacuum secondary's so it will only use the fuel it needs. I also found that my carb gasket was leaking air so that made it hard starting. It sure starts nice now. So much smoother idle too. I also noticed that it is not cooling well enough so I think I will look for an auxiliary fan.

That looks so cool. I am having my fiberglass fenders delivered tomorrow. I can hardly wait to paint them. I wonder if the holes are pre drilled

The ones on here were NOT drilled, and we had to add a brace on the bottom rear to stiffen them up a bit

Thanks Joedoh, it is a fun driver!

Re: My 42 Project

Got the fenders. Now where do they go? Can someone measure from the bottom of the rear fender to the bottom of the bed?

Re: My 42 Project

I wandered over here from the 67-72 message board and I'm glad I did. You've got a beautiful truck! I wish I could help you on the rear fender positioning, but I'm just here for the ride. Good luck!

I don't have the truck over here anymore......... but the running board attachment at the front of the fender will say a lot about how high (level) or low they will mount
I did add a third brace for the running boards at the "step" area, just a fyi to support the plastic fenders

I was with the truck this AM and took a measurement from the bottom of the Mar-K to the bottom of the rear fender looked like 8 3/4" how does that sound!

Re: My 42 Project

Solidaxle, those fenders you put on your truck are much nicer then mine. Mine are pretty flat on the outer curve and not much lip at the fender edge. Where did you get them?

So besides getting the body done, I finished the brake and directional.
Added a cooling fan to assist the water pump fan blade.
I had a holley 600 on it and it was having problems. Swaped an Edelbrock 600 and runs fine. has good vacuum with the luminati cam. I has a lot of exceleration. I was doing my timing and had no marks. Found out it was behind the waterpump. Short pump doesn't work for that. Took the front apart cut a new TDC on the dampener. Put it all back together done. Running about 8 degrees of timing. Might go a little more after a road trip or two.
Still need to hook up a wire to my 700r4 for lockout.

Re: My 42 Project

Glad you made a decision on the fenders they look great

Well we are having some water leaks in the "milliondollar radiator" and I don't remember how much trouble it is to remove the front end, I have slept too many times since mock-up.
Fenders to running boards, hood, core support, cooling lines and rad hoses what am I forgetting?

Re: My 42 Project

I know the pain. If you don't pull it all apart, you will scratch the paint on something. yeah trans lines, radiator hoses, cooling fan, wire harness, front fenders, hood. Wow that is some work.
Thanks Joedoh

Re: My 42 Project

Took the truck out for a ride. Very soft ride with stock suspension. Brakes work nice. That motor may have way too much horse power for the stock front end. I may have to change the steering to a rack or vega box or mustang 2.
The steering is tight but its almost like the wheels are off the ground. Maybe a steering dampener might do the trick
