Here is my GMC and my now 4Runner at the same place. 4Runner has 17's with beefier tires and it rides as good as the truck on road but much better off road.
How do you like your 4Runner?

I've been thinking about buying a used one to replace our little FWD SUV but they sure ask a lot of money for them! We want something smaller than our 2500HD for my wife to go to town for shopping and church, plus keeping extra miles off the pickup.

I love the 4Runner. Had a 97 model up until 2005 when it was totaled in a wreck. Loved that one too and decided to give it another shot. It fits what I do better than the truck anyway. I have a trailer for when I need to go to the lumber yard or such. Like the way it drives and has been off road a dozen times in the first eight months owning it.

I liked the GMC as well but the 8 speed transmission was giving me the well documented problems they seem to have. GM didn't appear to have a fix and after talking a number of other folks having the same issues I decided to go another route. I use my truck for work so my expenses pay for whatever I drive but I don't want to hassle with being in an out of the shop. I know two guys with newer model 4Runners. One has just over 250,000 miles on his and the other over 350,000.

Yeah, I don't think I've heard anything bad about the 4runner, except we almost bought one for the girls about 15 years ago. I was just about to write a check and we took it for one more drive on a mild day and it started overheating. I figure it had a blown head gasket. It was a cute thing with a 4 banger and five speed stick.

We're going to keep the pickup Just got it a few months ago and it will be our travel rig so that we can just stop and sleep in the back, or go boondocking in the forest or desert. It's a 6.0 and six speed a/t.

We just need to get a reliable real 4x4 grocery getter with solid rear axle (not IRS) and wheels & tires that can handle these crappy roads out here. Good thing might be that most 4runners seem to have the same size tires/wheels as our pickup!
