Re: Project "Bickle" 1948 1/2 ton 4.3 4l60e

thanks jim and robert!

stan I use 1/8th on my mounts, but I make them double sided (two supports on the pipe). I know a lot of guys that use 1/4 with a single support.

Re: Project "Bickle" 1948 1/2 ton 4.3 4l60e

thanks!

getting tired of waiting on the seat. did the alignment and did some shakedown cruising with a kitty litter bucket.

everything works well. found an exhaust leak from where I cross cut the pipe for slip fit and forgot to weld up the cut. very quiet now!

I did a "soft opening" where I listed it for sale pending seat install and a nice guy who has bought some 41 parts from me in the past called and looked and bought the same day. seat should be done sunday night, he is picking up monday.

the front suspension settled a little with the drive so it looks better to me. keep in mind this is only lowered from stock s10 1", and rides and steers like a go kart with the close ratio steering and sway bar setup of the zq8.

here are two pictures on the "for sale" corner of my parking.

I will post pictures of the seat when its installed.

summing up, I really thought the yellow and black colors would go well together, and they have, but differently than I pictured. I didnt really care for (and still dont care for) the champagne interior but I begrudgingly admit that it came out nice and is very classy! I may do it again, although the next truck is slated for black on black. this is hands down the NICEST truck I have done, if I had the first one here for a comparison I would probably get sick.

speaking of the next truck, keep an eye out, starting project 10! no moss grows under my feet!

Re: Project "Bickle" 1948 1/2 ton 4.3 4l60e

The black and yellow makes me think of a NYC cab....

This one looks to be a great driver and champagne isn't for everyone! I went that route cause it was close to the factory GMC interior color.

What's next...a real one for you or another to finish and pass along?

Ill do the black five window in this picture and sell it on, and then I should have enough money to colorado swap my 56, also in this pic (you can see the yellow bed I got the yellow rear fenders from! )

the 56 is ultimately supposed to be my shop fetcher. I am leaning towards AWD with a trailblazer 6 and transfer case, but probably 2wd 5 cylinder will be fine for me too, I like the lopey idle of the OHC 5s.

guess who called?

I picked up the next cab today too. in case you were thinking I just took apart complete trucks, nope, frequently start just like this, a bare cab.

That cab looks like a 47-51. Ready to watch this one get done.

Re: Project "Bickle" 1948 1/2 ton 4.3 4l60e

thanks everyone, sincerly.

robert its another centermount 48.

its all over but the shouting! adjusted the alignment a little more to straighten the steering wheel. got the reluctant gas gauge reading. bolted the seat in. plumbed the overflow tank. the serp belt was chirping so I splurged on one for the new owner. put about 70 miles on shaking it down and let me tell ya,

1. replacing the drivers door was a giant pain but totally worth it, the door shuts nice and doesnt chatter.

2. this is the smoothest, best riding truck I have ever done. very few rattles, a hood gasket at the back would fix the worst, but the big front sway and zq8 rear sway bar with the close ratio steering box makes this thing handle amazing. I still think it could benefit from drop spindles but hey, what do I know anyway.

I had to go by the rental to pick up all the interior handles, so I popped to that old service garage next door for a couple pics.

my wife was at moms so she wanted to drive it home. she told me I was lucky it was sold because she wanted to keep this one. high praise from the gal with super high standards. tomorrow I sell it on, and maybe pick up a new donor.

That's a compliment, "the best riding truck" is something. Do it again and give it to your wife.

Re: Project "Bickle" 1948 1/2 ton 4.3 4l60e

thanks guys!

in true application of the joedoh rule, he picked it up and I heard from him 20 min later. I had not replaced the flasher with an electronic flasher because it was working fine, no ultra fast blink like normal with LEDs. however that was only with the headlights OFF, as soon as you turn the lights on the turn signals quit. the factory s10 flasher has an IC chip to sense the load and if a bulb is out (what LEDs look like to electronics) it will glow the turn signal dimly and not function. so $20 and a 13 mile drive, and taking out the glovebox to install an electronic flasher (part number EP28 if you have a late model S10) and all was well.

Re: Project "Bickle" 1948 1/2 ton 4.3 4l60e

its the LU3 motor, only came in 03 s10 as 2wd, you could get it in 04-05 crew cab 4x4 though. has a different cam profile and different rocker arms, has injectors not poppets, as well as the latest code in the 0411 PCM. I have done LU3 s10s before but this one had the most care and almost the lowest miles. the Zq8 suspension is the factory lowered suspension too with gas shocks and good spring rates.

guys who compare the 4.3 as gutless should drive an LU3 Zq8 truck, 3.73 rear axle, G80 locker, most power and tq of the 4.3. its a ton of fun.

the guy doing my seats is a local guy who had a shop but now works out of his garage.

Looks like I missed a lot of action from not logging on the site in a long time. Build looks great, and glad you got it sold quick. Looking forward to the next one. Congrats on the new properties and a whole bunch of parts. Also, that plasma table is awesome!!! I might have to inquire with you about making a few parts sometime.
