OH MY! Those are some serious bearing caps, makes one of my old Dana 60's look inadequate. I couldn't imagine how badly that trans or diff oil smelled.

Re: Rearend and trans lube change Viking 59

I wish and wonder why it wasn't but it's a
non posi...
without the Duels I almost got stuck
surprising no rust not even the inside of the tin cover with no paint on it no rust.? and the rear end oil was full and did not smell that bad

Only thing I can figure is the gear oil did it's job by coating everything inside that big ol rear and preserved it
.
.
.
funny everthing above ground rusty as all get out...
bellow ground no rust go figure.?

I don't know of any two speed axles that were POSI back then. it was hard enough getting the planetary reduction gears in the carrier housing let alone a POSI unit

Re: Rearend and trans lube change Viking 59

Today was a good day.!
longest trip to date in the truck

Well did some house cleaning today (wiring) took it out to get fuel
down to 9% in a 30 gal tank.?
to the local propane store (only one) when i got there they were closed no reason probably because it was sunny and friday.?

It was a grueling 6 miles round trip and when I say grueling.
I'm mean I think I bruised a kidney....

The tires felt like there were more square then round it rattle so hard knocked the cap off the battery
it was a tough go I hit 35 in fourth gear so I tried my hand is two speed shifting
I failed miserably .......
Did get the rear to shift twice

I think the magic is
get up to speeds
push in clutch
let the engine idle (to build vacuum) while rolling hard
hit the two speed axle button
let out the clutch give some more fuel and hope for the best
I'm 2 out of 7 tries
I'll have to study that utube video some more
.
sorry no pictures of truck
.
but you ol duffers might appreciate a model 77
.
