Re: 68 c10 6.5 turbo diesel

Well I have fixed an issue I have been chasing with this set up. I kept getting the code 35 injection pulse to short. I bought a new PMD the new kind and got a good ECM still had that code. I ran the motor and touched the PMD wires and they were hot and it shut down when they were moved. The PMD harness is one of those extension harnesses for remote mounting the PMD. My fix was I removed the intake and ran 18ga high current wires from the PMD to the fuel solenoid of the IP. I then shortened the command and feed back wires from PMD to ECM, they are now less then a foot. I then ran a 18ga power wire for the PMD on its own fuse. I do not have that code no more and is a lot more responsive if anyone has a code 35 or 36 and has the remote harness check it first.

Re: 68 c10 6.5 turbo diesel

Subscribed. 6.2/6.5 turbo is an engine choice on my list to repower a 1979 C20.

You do fine work! We need more pictures.

Direct bolt in on those trucks. Should make a nice combo.

Re: 68 c10 6.5 turbo diesel

Well I am trying to get time to work on it again. I started ordering parts for the exhaust so we will see how far I get. I started it up a couple of days ago to circulate coolant through it and was surprised that it started right up. I was having fuel drain back issues but think I got that sorted out. It was 32 deg out when I started it and let the glows warm up once and she fired up, smoked out the neighbors but was worth it. I think that's not bad for low compression and sitting 3 months. I got tied up with other projects my Detroit dually getting the heater hooked back up. I also got my 76 K20 back together and tearing up the mud. I just bought a 78 GMC motorhome so I have been messing with it. I should have some updates soon keep an eye out.

I hope you are right!! I started a thread on the 73-87 build forum but no one seems to want to talk about it just yet. I plan to go check out the engines after work today.

This will be my first time ever dealing with a diesel.

Re: 68 c10 6.5 turbo diesel

Post the build here more people will chime in. I can help as much as I can just ask. It will be easy if you get a mechanical injected 6.5.

Re: 68 c10 6.5 turbo diesel

Well I have been needing to weld a new v band flange on the turbo for some time. I removed it and notice the exhaust housing and the intake full of oil. I got a rebuild kit and overhauled it. I also coated the turbine and the heat shield in ceramic coating to keep the heat out of the center section. I got the v band welded on the housing and that is done. I also made the battery tray finally. The battery is going to be mounted under the bed on the right side. I have cranked the engine over in the extreme cold with a very weak 800cca battery and it has been ok. I will be using a new group 78 side terminal 900cca battery. I am using side terminals so it is easer to remove the terminals under the bed. I still have some small stuff to finish on the tray. Here are some pics the battery in the pics is just for mock up.

Very nice work. Did you do the ceramic coating yourself?

Re: 68 c10 6.5 turbo diesel

Thank. Yea I do my own ceramic coating. I bought all the equipment for less then it would cost me to get it done. I would have to go 100 miles one way for the nearest coater.

Did you go with an east wood kit or something similar? I've been considering doing this as well.

Re: 68 c10 6.5 turbo diesel

No I get the coating from cerakoat now. I was getting from techline but was a hassle dealing with. The rest of the tooling I just bought what was needed where I could find it. I will say this the most important tool you need is a good respirator. This stuff is bad you can't even open the bottle without a respirator.

I got exhaust mostly done. Battery tray and cables done. I also got driveline made and installed. Finally got to drive it and it runs good.
