Flared fenders on a LOW static drop

Anyone thought of doing this? I have a low static 54 and the wheels will rub when turned. I know there are other options like backspacing etc but I wanted to see if anyone has added flares to the fenders and if it looks ok! Please don't attack me for this question.

Thanks

Re: Flared fenders on a LOW static drop

imo... flares never look good
proper backspace is the only way to go and should have been your first choice

That's what I was thinking but I've never seen flares so I wasn't sure. The back spacing is good I just set my cab a bit low on the frame. I'm thinking I may be able to fix a bit of the problem by rolling the inside of the fenders.

I would bet youd have to cut them first, the edge is rolled under and is hard as a rock. my 47 gmc had a dent on the edge that was rubbing the tire on turns and it took a full act of sledgehammer congress and god holding his tongue right to knock it out of the way

Yeah joedoh is right they are tough, I used vise grips with heater hose covering the tips to squeeze mine flatter so my tires would rub. Made the fender even more rigged too.

Re: Flared fenders on a LOW static drop

On my '48, I narrowed the rear axle and made some shallow tubs to accommodate the rear wheel, but the front I'm still worried about. I'm not on the road yet

Steve - how low was your static drop? What clearance did you have to the fender in front that resulted in the rub?

Re: Flared fenders on a LOW static drop

E015475,the cab is about a half inch off the s10 frame and the fender is about 4.5" off the ground at the lowest point. 1952ssr, that's what I think I'm going to have to do too! I think that with a slight mod to the mounting height will keep me low and turning. Thanks guys!!!

Re: Flared fenders on a LOW static drop

Steve - thanks for the info. But what I'm really curious about is where you're front wheel backspacing places the tire relative to the fender lip

On some AD trucks it looks like you might get a finger width or two between the fender and the sidewall of the front tire and on others it looks like there's at least a hand's width between the top of the fender and the tire sidewall.

With a 4.5" height to bottom of the fender on a static drop, what's the space between the lip and the sidewall up front?

Thanks again,
