Cracked Glass

I have some cracked side glass on my Packard. (drivers door and rear window) It's not bad. But I don't like it.

It's flat glass. I want it replaced. The only thing is that all I have ever replaced was windshields.

Any experience on how much of a pain this will be to do? Or how spendy it might get? They're going to have to cut it to fit. I highly doubt that anyone has glass in stock for a 71 year old Packard.

I have no local glass guy and don't know how to measure this with any accuracy.

Re: Cracked Glass

I'd think that new flat side glass is an easily internet searched subject. You might try that.

Re: Cracked Glass

I would call a few local restoration shops. Or as local as you can get. I have a guy whose shop works on Mustangs, Corvettes, and other hot rods. I found a glass guy through him and asked what kind of specialty stuff he's done. He told me he had put glass in an early Rolls-Royce the day before. Hopefully you can find a guy like that.

I realize that. I just wondered if someone had been down this road before. To tell me the do's and don'ts.

So many things start out seemingly easy then become a mess. I don't want to buy something that doesn't fit. Been there. Done that.

Re: Cracked Glass

If it's whole but cracked, should be laminated glass still, take out whole and send it out. Find a place with a good rep, hopefully not to far, shipping glass will be expensive. I would ask for the old one back as well, "yeah more cost..hehe" but you'll still have a good template and will work on the opposite side

There is a Glass and Mirror shop near me.
That also does custom Vehicle windows.

The guy in there knows his stuff and helps
Others cut and fix Custom Stuff.

Re: Cracked Glass

I get a lot of answers from car clubs .like when I needed a new front window and stainless trim installed in the 72 Chevy truck I owned ,, they put me onto a guy who was the only one around that would mess with the trim..

Re: Cracked Glass

It's actually pretty easy. The hard part is getting it out. Once you've done that, you can either take the pieces of glass to a shop to have them cut or you can trace a pattern on kraft paper that they can cut it from. Flat laminated is not too difficult to cut and shouldn't break the bank. Make sure they seam the edges (sand them smooth). And if you're considering a tint, this is a good time to do that, since flat laminate comes with various tints. You also have the option of having them send your pattern out to get tempered glass made. If you're not going for 100% original, it's a good option. It's more expensive, but it's also a lot tougher.

Now cutting down windshields, that's a bit more complicated because of the compound curves.

Re: Cracked Glass

Most any auto glass shop should be able to cut your glass . When it comes to Packard parts these are the guys to call .

Re: Cracked Glass

if its flat and just cracked, any local glass shop can make you tempered (usually the old stuff is two ply like a windshield) side glass using the originals as patterns. you arent as bad off as guys with just a shell and no glass for sure. my local shop will cut it and install it if I want, usually 75ea for the glass and 100 for the install.

Re: Cracked Glass

I got a quote from my local glass shop to make new vent and side windows for my 63. He could only do laminated glass, so I ended up using the ones that came out of the truck. His price was around $250 if I'm remembering it correctly. He reset the glass in the frames for me for $30 bucks or so. I didn't have to run the risk of breaking the glass that way
