Re: Pic Thread: Cool Old Cars

Tim I'm diggin' on the 50s and 60s Fords.

My dad had a 1951 Crestliner just like this one (except for the bumper gaurds, spotlights, and door handle protector thingys). He died in 1958 and I was heartbroken. The Crestliner got sold off a couple of years later and I was heartbroken again.

Before it got sold my mom drove this 3 on the tree beauty with me and my two sisters to Death Valley to visit a relative. Guess what, it overheated. We were saved by a passerby but I'll never forget being stranded in DEATH Valley.

I love all those 60 Starliners but this is more to my taste, stock height and some nice wheels.

I love the transitional years, like '49 and '60 ('61 for GM). The '49s were the first integrated bodies, yet they still made the 5-window coupe. I dig how the Fords still had external trunk hinges. The Chevys came as the couple sedan, and torpedo back, which was really the old sedan. The '60 Fords were all by themselves in style,in between the 50s & 60s. The '61 Chevys were a '60 with the fins folded down, yet the first of the late-great Impalas (62-64). Gotta love a bubble top. The same with the '61 Chevy as the '49,they had so many roofline options. The carry-over and the new.

I was ready to plunk down some change for a Torino like this (color and all) in 1968. But then Uncle Sam came calling and ruined everything.

When I pumped gas in high school every once in a while one of these Eldorado Sevilles would roll in for fuel and I would gaze at those offset fins and the other Caddy geegaws in incredulous awe.

Re: Pic Thread: Cool Old Cars

I have been partial to 57-59 Fords for a long time because we were a Ford family when I was a young lad. I found pictures online that resemble quite closely the cars we had back then. My personal pics of the actual cars are rare, black and white, and usually out of focus, etc. so these are great substitutes.

We had one like this when I was in grade school.
Name: 57 ford fairlane 500 1.jpg
Views: 664
Size: 12.1 KB

I learned to drive in one like this.
Name: 1957 Country Squire.jpg
Views: 741
Size: 54.5 KB

This is a model, but my first car was a 58 wagon and it ended up looking a lot like this one same color but with chrome reverse rims and basket inserts, redline wide ovals, tinted windows, blacked out grill with the T-bar removed, blacked out rear trim insert, and black pin striping.
Name: 1958 wagon model.jpg
Views: 1139
Size: 34.1 KB

I wanted one of these real bad for a time but I would have it yellow, and without the geegaws.
Name: 1957 panel.jpg
Views: 670
Size: 22.7 KB

Then my last Ford of that era was a 59 with a 390 that I had while I was in the Navy once I could afford a car again. It looked just like this but no rocker panel trim or luggage rack.
