Nothing set in stone yet. I did move it down 1 1/4" and that made a big difference. I have the clearance I needed now. Just want to figure out the length column I need. Thanks for the help and pictures. Steve

My Safari was a similar dark red to the color of my '55 now. I never really thought of that til I saw your comment and was thinking about that van.

PS: I got a killer deal on a Flaming River column off Craigslist with a bent cup or surround on the signal mechanism. I contacted Flaming River to buy a replacement - they sent me a new one free of cost! I THINK I paid $150. Good deal but can't beat your $35!!

I want to have the key in the dash. It does look like your column. The shift lever is on the opposite side of a typical one. Steve

Re: Steering column choice for 57

I used a swap meet GM tilt column. Not sure what it came out of but I suspect it’s from a late ‘60’s - early ‘70’s luxury model due to lack of an ignition switch and the turn signal switch had provisions for cornering lights.

Probably going with a 32" ididit universal column in chrome or paintable steel. It's expensive but what I want. This might be my last build so going a little overboard. Steve

Re: Steering column choice for 57

Hey 57 if your not going chrome and gonna use steel painted just use gm column and money you save can put towards other goodies. i got this gm caddie column for $60.It has column shift so no need to buy expensive floor shifter so money saved. i didnt want key in dash anymore as you can see where it previously will scratch paint.

Thanks for the suggestion. I do want to keep the key on the dash. The only thing that I have a question on is what length column to get. The column in it now is 31" so it would be either 30" or 33" which seems the most common. Still a ways away from this decision. Thanks again Steve
