Thumbs up Re: Pickup Truck Trailers

my plan was to paint the trailer to match my project truck but things are on hold with both right now. for the present i'm just using the trailer to help move my dad's "stuff" and get him settled in with me and my family. i love the way my trailer tows with the longer tounge and 3/4 ton leaf springs and 3/4 ton eaton axle housing. i gutted the axle-no gears, brake components, axleshafts and packed the bearings with boat trailer grease.

Re: Pickup Truck Trailers

Rob,
that's exactly how mine looks underneath. sure gets rid of a lot of excess weight when you lose all that unnecessary stuff. i also only need to carry one spare tire since my trucks are both 3/4 tons and all run the same size tires.

I made up for it by not buying that 50th that you have in your garage......

I agree about reducing the weight. I'm thinking about getting a regular trailer straight axle for it to reduce the weight even more. I will be pulling it behind my 67 crewcab and my Suburban, so I'll probably switch it to 5 lug.....

Re: Pickup Truck Trailers

very neat everybody. There are more than I expected. Keep them coming.

Oh yeah, I could see how the coils might not be the best for a trailer. I just wanted the coil setup so I could put bags on and have the hole rig lay down. I have a 69 with coils I was going to use.

, It's actually 2 nice to use as a trailer. The floor is very straight and it only has a couple of dents in the body. I would like to find a period correct topper for it because I may end up painting my Crewcab to match. They would make a nice matched set, .

Re: Pickup Truck Trailers

Bump...as I just picked up my own trailer project & hunting ideas!
It now has the OE arms/coil springs & feels pretty scary. I like the deal about gutting a 14bolt & using leaf springs. That would be a cheap 8 lug set-up for me & could build a stump jumper on the rearend cover just like the one on my Blazer...all matching!!!

Re: Pickup Truck Trailers

Why not just fix the wallered out holes? I had the same problem but welded some 1/4" steel on the inside of the frame and then filled in the outside to make it all even and voila! Stronger than new! My outer brackets were toast too so I grabbed the double shock mounts of my Blazer that were not being used anyway and took the old one off and bolted the doubles in as the outer mount re-drilled and now I have 1/4" steel all the way around!

Re: Pickup Truck Trailers

If you used an old Eaton HO 52 or 72 rear axle can you use another rear cover when you remove the the drop out? I thought the bolt patterns were the same front and rear. Also an old set of 4x4 drive flanges can be used in the rear instead of leaving the axles in place for hub covers.
