It might be fatal . . ....

for my daily beater. Driving home tonight after work, I felt a strange vibe from the gas pedal while climbing the steep curve on the mixmaster. When I entered the short section of hi-way that leads to my house I could hear the engine just rattling away. Got off the hi-way & it has a definite miss & lots of valvetrane clatter.

Got home & checked the oil . . . none. I looked down by the starter & notice I developed a serious leak by the sending unit on the side of the block (6cyl). I grab a rag to wipe it off so I can see what's going on & it comes off in my hand. The 1.5-2" section of tubing that the fittings connect to was cracked & leaked all the oil out on the way home.

I've got to get an easy out to remove what's left of the tubing & put some oil in it & see how bad it is . . .... not holding my breath since it was missing so bad (was fine when I left work 15mins before). Had a sh!tty day @ work as well so I guess @ least everything is consistent w/my day.

Whew - Doesn't sound good does it, 'bro? Hope it's not as bad as it seemed. Might be a good excuse to swap it over to a V8 - At least that's what I'd tell my wife.

Hopefully you can fix it, I am partial to inliners, they are cool in a simple kinda way.

I ran a 250 out of oil once, it just died on me, I poured 2 quarts of oil in it and run it home, BUT I didn't have all that noise goin' on under the hood. Good luck, but it sounds like it is toast.

you can try to use an easyout on the tubing piece to remove it or you could take a tap and tap some threads into the tubing then take a bolt with pipedope on the threads to seal it so you can checkout the condition of the engine

Depending on how worn the engine was before it ran out of oil, it might be ok, some of these things are so loose they will run without oil for a long time.

You know those old faded blue jeans w/all the holes & stains that fit so good you just can't chunk them??? Well, that's how broken in this motor is .

Got the proper easy out today @ work to get out the remaining chunk of tubing & I'll pick up a couple 5qts of oil & see what happens tonight. Thanks.

Pull your valve cover off and make sure that none of the pushrods have popped out. It's commom for this to happen when you have no oil pressure. The hydraulic lifters will collapse. I hope you didn't hurt it too bad.

Welllllllllllllllllllllllll . . . . .....IT'S ALIVE!!!

A little more clatter than before, but no bottom end knocking (after filling w/3.5qts of oil). It took a little persuading to get the broken threads of the nipple out, but ok other than that . . ...so far. Still reading about 30psi of pressure when cold (normal) & I'll take it out tomorrow & heat it up a little to see what the pressure does when up to temp. Thanks for the the positive words & thoughts!
