Re: '72 Sierra Grande Critique

Ask him to send a pic of the decal on the inside of the glovebox door and post it if possible so we can see how it was outfitted by GM...it looks really clean. Does the carpet on the kickpanels and doors hide any rust or speaker holes?

Re: '72 Sierra Grande Critique

Looks like a nice truck.

Even if you talked him down to $15,000 that's still a little steep. It appears to be in decent shape, but it looks a little too nice to be a chore truck.

If you want it, buy it and drive it. That's what these trucks were meant to do. Don't change a thing unless you truly want to. I have one of those plastic fuel filters on my truck and it hasn't caused me any problems.

Re: '72 Sierra Grande Critique

No such thing as High Sierra. Trim levels for GMC in 72 were Custom, Super Custom, Sierra and Sierra Grande. I have had a 71 c1500 Custom (profile photo) and 72 K2500 Sierra Grande in the past.

Re: '72 Sierra Grande Critique

Door panels are correct for 72. The doors should have a screw inside below the vent window. It looks to me as if the truck was a super custom that they put sierra grande emblems and woodgrain on during resto. None of these things are a big deal, but in order for the truck to be worth top dollar it should have been done right.

The lack of a cargo light supports my statement above as well.

Re: '72 Sierra Grande Critique

The valve covers are from a later model. So I would assume the whole engine is a wild guess.

OK, I'm going to edit my response.I thought, on a '72 truck, the oil filler was on a raised tube near the brake booster.

This truck looks to have a push-in style oil cap on the passenger side. Without opening the hood, I think my '72 corvette has the same one.

Actually you are correct in the valve over on the pass side being incorrect. I can see a bracket spot welded to the upper front part that isnt correct for 72. These are later vc's that had that provision to attach part of the wiring harness to.
It never ceases to amaze me that someone will spend all the time and money to "restore" a vehicle but not spend the time to do it right!

Re: '72 Sierra Grande Critique

I'm with LockDoc. I don't see where this member asked anyone what he should do with it if he bought it. He simply asked for a critique of it as it is,before he buys it. And,just because it's a longbed doesn't mean it can't be worth the price. Looks like a pretty good restoration. 100% correct? No. But,that only matters to show judges and guys who read about all the tiny little details here.

Personally i would not pay top dollar for a truck that was presented as restored to original but was not. IMO errors/ variations are OK as long as they are disclosed and the truck priced accordingly. I am finishing up a 72 swb stepside. It is not chalk mark correct (non stock paint color for that matter) but when i tracked down doors for it, i found 72 doors. It is a Cheyenne, so it has a cargo light and headliner.

What I said was:
"And,just because it's a longbed doesn't mean it can't be worth the price."
Then,I said:
"Looks like a pretty good restoration. 100% correct? No. But,that only matters to show judges and guys who read about all the tiny little details here",which was not a relating to value.
Fact is,that appears to be a very nice truck that you couldn't buy and restore for the asking price...unless it was damn nice to start with and bought cheap. The seller is obviously a "flipper" and has his used car salesman line of crap, yet no real knowledge of the truck's history or what was or wasn't done (the important stuff). I wouldn't take his $1,000 wiggle room comment as the final word. If you like everything about it and want to buy it,I'd tell him $12k is my top dollar. From what I've seen, the asking price isn't top dollar. It's in the general $15k range that you see restored trucks go for all over the place. We see them going for $10k more, and that's top dollar. One thing's for sure, this truck would have cost significantly less had it been bought out of Eastern Washington state from the previous owner. You'll never get your best deal from a flipper...especially after transport costs across the nation. I agree that, for no matter what the price,a seller that doesn't disclose honest info is a turn off. I walk away once I hear BS because you never know where it starts or ends. All it takes is one white lie and I'm outta there...unless it's something so cheap their BS doesn't matter.

Re: '72 Sierra Grande Critique

I think the price is a little high, especially for a non AC GMC. From the pics, despite the details that many have pointed out, it looks stunningly gorgeous. Gosh, 2 tone GMC, red/white, LWB and those 4 beautiful headlights...it doesn't get much better than that. I love the white walls, too.

Re: '72 Sierra Grande Critique

I just received the inspection report and there are 3 things that bother me.
- No headliner - shouldn't a Grand Sierra have a headliner?
- A tear in the dash - Can that be replaced?
- There is a photo of what looks like a rusted out fender bottom. I'll post it later.

If I decide to make an offer on the truck I'm going in at $13,500.

ETA
Here is the report link.
http://www.roadreadycertified.com/materials/index/tzqyn
About 2/3 of the way into the photo pages is a page with a couple shots of the underside. The upper left photo shows what I think is the bottom of a the left front fender, and it looks like someone painted over rotted out metal.
Is that what you see?

Thanks

Re: '72 Sierra Grande Critique

That report link did not work for me. My critique is that the truck is not a legit. If a Sierra Grande is what you really want, then I'd wait for something that's correct.
Looks like you are new to the board as well (WELCOME!)... and great trucks (more reasonably priced) always show up on the for-sale section.

Re: '72 Sierra Grande Critique

It doesn't work for me either. They have it pretty well locked down. I can't even pull the photos out of the PDF file. That doesn't mean I'm giving up, though!!!!!

I agree that there is something fishy with the truck. No cargo light and no headliner so at least the cab probably is not from a Sierra Grande, so it's possibly been cobbled together or cloned.

I'm not really looking for a Sierra Grande but if I'm paying a premium for one it needs to be what it's supposed to be.

Thanks for your input!

If anyone wants to see the report shoot me your e-mail address and I'll send it to you. It's a 5MB PDF file.

My 72 Sierra has both a headliner and cargo light.

Re: '72 Sierra Grande Critique

Since the truck needs AC (I live in Houston), a new dash pad, headliner, cargo light, and some paint work on the tailgate, plus the fact that I just have an uneasy feeling about the restoraton, I offered the seller quite a bit less than what he's asking. I'm pretty sure we're too far apart to work out a deal.

Re: '72 Sierra Grande Critique

Sorry to revive a thread that is almost two years old but I moved to Spokane last year and after getting settled in I'm again looking for a 67-72 restored C10 or GMC half ton.
I'll place a "wanted" ad in the classified section but am curious if anyone is familiar with this truck for sale in Eugene.
