Wiper Board or Switch?

Wipers work fine and then sometimes they will go from intermittent to low on their own. Sometimes they will not shut off and will almost never revert back to intermittent cycle on their own. Really erratic behavior.

Read several old thread but didn't find this problem. I had the humming and not working issue previously. Resoldered the board and it fixed that issue some time ago. I am leaning toward the board being bad but the switch is an aftermarket so it makes it suspect too.

Re: Wiper Board or Switch?

What year is your truck? 88-94 is the wiper switch is different from the 95+ multifunction switch.

Re: Wiper Board or Switch?

The brushes get worn down and start loosing connectivity. I had the exact problem on my 89. At times I would have to open the hood and whack it to get them working again. Put a new motor in mine, this is a very common problem in the older motors.

Re: Wiper Board or Switch?

Should have put that 93.

Angryman117, I think you read that wrong. They always work, just not properly.

Like you, not real sure. I am thinking by your description of the conditions, that it is the switch and not the motor.

Re: Wiper Board or Switch?

My 99 does something similar, while set to intermittent it will go from intermittent to low/constant for about 3-5 swipes of the blade, then go back to intermittent for anywhere from 60 seconds to a couple minutes. Doesn't even do it that often. I never have any issues turning them on or off, just the speed changes on it's own sometimes. Hasn't been bad enough that I've even really thought of investigating it yet.

Re: Wiper Board or Switch?

With a bad switch you really have no control over the functions per say. Since you previously repaired the motor, and trust your repair we will say that it's not at fault. Get a switch and plug it in to make sure that's the issue. To replace the switch you have to pull the column apart. Steering wheel, horn, turn signal switch, ignition switch have to come out. Than you can pull the switch out from its place. You'll have to move the bottom plastic collar up and remove the the plastic cover that runs up the column. Tie some string to the old harness and fish it out. Tie string to new harness and reverse procedure. If you've never had a column apart just go slow, you'll need a steering wheel puller and the big lock plate compressor.

Re: Wiper Board or Switch?

In my '88 Sierra, I finally replaced everything having to do with my old wiper.

A newer style motor, and the switch...... BOTH the turn signal selector & the switch mounted on the steering column.

If the selecting doesn't feel clean, then your column/mounted switch needs replacing. ( pulling steering wheel)

Replacing the wiper motor was quite easy!

Column switch was done at a shop.

So nice to have a perfect working wiper!!

Re: Wiper Board or Switch?

Local auto parts got me a replacement board and the wipers work perfect again. Counter man was a Chevy dealer parts man and said he sold a ton of those when they were newer. Very common problem.
