Molding on hood lip and tailgate help

Ok guys,I've searched high and low for a close up picture of the hole location of the hood lip molding and tailgate upper trim pieces. Just got my 68 c20 back from paint and putting it together and Im trying to get the nerve to drill holes in my new paint. Any help or tips or pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Molding on hood lip and tailgate help

The back. Read through some old posts, Found one from 2010 about the hole location for tail light bezels. That helped a lot as these repop ones really are like working with soft lead! One member suggested putting velcro under the clips and believe me that was the best tip I ever got! I kinda bent one up a little by pushing too hard. May have to replace it when its all said and done.

Re: Molding on hood lip and tailgate help

I currently have my trim off of the hood doing body and paint. I will try to get a good picture or two and post it tonight. Can't help on the tailgate though.

I used this for my tailgate, definitely no fun drilling new paint. Good Luck!

Re: Molding on hood lip and tailgate help

Excellent! Thank you sooo much Barnfind. So it looks like the holes for the hood trim are directly in the edge of the hood crease or slightly above it. Am I seeing that correctly?

Re: Molding on hood lip and tailgate help

Yes. That is a factory hood with factory holes. I added a steel cowl from a mid nineties truck hood.

Hey Dennis, here is a closer shot of the location of the holes as far as the ridge is concerned.

Re: Molding on hood lip and tailgate help

I recently took the trim off my 68 hood and it looks like the holes might have been drilled from the inside. There is a nasty burr on the outside. It certainly might make it easier to drill them on that ridge.

Re: Molding on hood lip and tailgate help

Thank you both, Barnfind and Jason!
Exactly the info I needed.
Yea Jason I was wondering about drilling on the edge and also I guess the nut is just going to be forced into the crease on the inside.
Barnfind, the pictures are worth a thousand words! Thanks again!
Now you guys have given me the balls to do this job!

Re: Molding on hood lip and tailgate help

Thanks for all the help guys.
After measuring the stud distance and measuring again and again, I still managed to come up about half a hole off. A little rat tail file work took care of that! Thanks again guy's.
Now I'm going to try and decipher Lanman 1972's drawing and tackle the tailgate trim. Thanks Lanman!

Thanks buddy! This has been an ongoing project for about 8 years now. Kind of did everything backwards. Re did the inside, new carpet, reupholster seats, new dash gauge bezels etc. Thinking I was just going to let the outside age "naturally"since it is a daily driver. Then decided to do a paint job and new bed wood. Now my daily driver is becoming more of a "show truck". Not what I originally wanted! But I'll take it!

Re: Molding on hood lip and tailgate help

Tailgate trim is on. Had some problems with the counterpart brand clips and softness of the moldings but was able to remove it and reinstall it with better quality clips.

Re: Molding on hood lip and tailgate help

I got some good quality clips from Fastenal. They happen to be our parts vendor for my work. The quality is excellent compared to the junk counterpart ones. They slid right into the holes perfectly. Clip on the bottom is the Fastenal clip. Clip on top is the counterpart one.

part # 0162651

Its the only clip in that style they have. I just took a chance that it would be the right one. It is green anodized and WAY better than the counterpart ones that have no two alike.
