Re: Vintage YOM License Plate Thread

A bad pic of the Michigan 68 plate on my 68c30 and my 72 plate for my blazer which I have not put on yet. The story of how I got then is kind of neat though. I got them from a local ma and pa auto parts store that been in business since 1923. The owners brother owns a junk yard that's been around for awhile and they kept all the plates that came in from who knows how far back. There's a wall in the store with almost every Michigan plate year on it. And he's got boxes more of vintage plates in the back.

Nice clean '63 plate ('62 plate with '63 corner tab) on the Grand Prix:

You are not allowed to run a Manufacturer's plate as a YOM....unless you happened to sneak it through before the rule change:

No dealer plates, either. I was too late on this one:

I got that one from our original salesman, still in the paper. It's for special occasions only.

So these are what found their way onto the car. I'm not even sure where I got these; I think they were just laying around in the garage, but now there's kinda some history there and I'm stuck with them:

Isn't it true that you can only drive the vehicle to and from car shows, and its really only limited in mileage? What was the rule change that you were referring to. I'm restoring a 69 and 71. I have a couple of 69 plates that I had thought about using (maybe I can't depending on what the rule is that you referred to), but don't know if I will. I want to drive the truck more than just to cars shows.

OG plates that have been on my 72 since day one, and registered continually for 42 years...no YOM fees or additional tags required. Have original dealer frames as well.

Yes, normal annual registration. No added/special fees, no driving limitations, no smog inspection (pre-76).

The official verbiage is that you may not use it for "routine" transportation.

The intent is that you cannot use it as a daily driver; beyond that there is some interpretation involved. From the Law's perspective it seems to be only to and from shows, parades or to get it repaired.

Me: I drive it to the hardware store, or to work whenever I feel like it (because I know it's not my daily driver).

Lastly - during Woodward Cruise month (lol - the month of August) all restrictions are removed and you can drive as much as you want.

The rule change I was referring to was disallowing "special" YOM plates: no Manufacturer's plates and no Dealer plates are allowed. I think I snuck the "M" plate through because the word was not spelled out, but they caught me on the dealer plate because it was explicitly stated.

Re: Vintage YOM License Plate Thread

First off is my most prized plate, the original 67 plate from when my great grandfather bought the truck brand new in 67. I'll probably leave it in it's current condition, though I have considered clearing over it for protection. This one will go on the wall on my shop as the centerpiece for the display of my other plates.

Next, we have the two plates my wife bought me for my birthday a few years back, a 67, and a 78 NC Farm Truck plate, one for each of my trucks.

I'm currently running the 78 plate on my dually

I have several other old plates that I'm going to try my hand at restoring to make as wall hangers. My father in law has the bathroom in his house bordered all the way around with old plates.

Re: Vintage YOM License Plate Thread

Finally got mine on last night.

I have to do better on the mounting. Got it temp'd up until I get a rear bumper on there. (although having it zip tied to the wiring harness kinda goes with the popular rat-rod look, don't it? )

Roadmaster, are you talking about Joe's on M-104? I have been there a few times. My buddies own a couple of yards in Wolf Lake. I live close to you in Fruitport.

Re: Vintage YOM License Plate Thread

One of these two 72 plates could be the original plate for my truck...found them both in my Grandfathers shop after he passed. The two 69 plates were found there too.

I am going to attempt to restore the worst of the 72's soon...a good winter day project.

Will restore the trailer hitch then too, or replace with a hidden receiver.

Here's mine. I bought these unrestored originals on eBay last year.

The California YOM program requires the same year sticker on the rear plate as the vehicle. The current registration stickers are separate. This arrangement is fine but I keep thinking I'd like to find a less obvious place to put the aluminum current sticker tags.

I think the upper tabs are fine. But I think I would ask for a new month sticker when you renew in November and paint the tabs black. Just my opinion.

I just renewed ! I agree with you. I thought of painting the inside flat area black and leaving the rims natural aluminum when I first set this up. Maybe next year !

Went antique shopping with the wife today, came home with a NC 1970 plate like that one for $5, not in that nice of shape though. It will be hung on the wall in my garage below a picture of my old 1970 Chevelle

Cool. I got a Texas tag for a couple bucks on ebay (too new for the truck) just to hang up in the garage.
