$4k budget - what can I get?

My beautiful financial manager (the wife) has given me a $4000 budget that I can use towards the purchase of a new old truck.

We both like the 60-66 and the 67-72 body styles. We just want a truck that'll be fun to wrench on, great for cruizin', and may take a run or two down the 1/4 mile now and then. Probably start with a small-block, and (maybe) someday drop in a big block.

I've been shopping around on the internet, and I know I should be able to hook-up a fairly decent, running, driveable truck for that price, or less. But I can't hear the truck, can't drive it, and can't see the rust spots.

I'd prefer to spend less, because it gives me some extra $$$ to work with (start on body, etc).

What should I be able to get for under $4k (condition, body style, etc)?

Thanks!

welcome to the board drogster... Since your in alaska i understand what you are saying about how hard it is to get a truck up here.. (i just moved mine from iowa).. I would definately suggest keeping an eye out for trucks in anchorage and the valley.. there are a ton of nice clean 67-72 trucks rollin around up here...and nobody wants to spend 1000 bucks to ship up there project...

Best of luck
-Jake

ps. keep an eye in the board meets forum...i am going to try and have a get together for us Alaskans...there are 4 or 5 of us already on the board.

I don't know about in Alaska. But from what I've found around here, you can get a pretty nice LWB truck for less than $4k (I've found several from $2k-$3k). Nice SWB's (esp 67 & 68) will run 2x's the $ of a similar LWB.
