Heater core
How hard is it to replace the heater core on a 72 w/factory air.
I was a professional mechanic for over 50 years & would tie in with anything. I am old now & its hard to get in certain positions. I just hate to have someone else work on my truck. I have studied the manual & it looks dueable. I wonder if a guy left the nut off that goes by the inner fender, it would hold the box up tight. George |

Take the passenger inner fender out and it's not bad at all. You are gonna have a bunch of people say you don't have to and they are correct but for the time it will save you it's worth taking it out.

I dropped the inner fender and took the hood off. I found that plumbers putty works great at making a new seal when putting it back. I tried black silicone but just made a big mess.
Oh, mine doesn't have factory air so I not sure how much more trouble it would be with air. |

Vey difficult if not impossible to remove the outer air box without moving the hinge/hood out of the way. That being said, heater core is located inside the cab on the a/c trucks. Do your research when getting a replacement heater core. Some replacements are physically smaller and do not fit well.

Probably the easiest heater core you will ever do. Replaced mine last fall. I left the hood on, dropped the fender liner. Mine is also factory A.C.

You can saw a 1” hole or so in the inner fender to get to the hidden nut, i have done it many times. Saves a lot of work on a rusty inner fender.

70 C20, factory AC. I did mine last Spring. I don't remember doing anything with the fender. I did remove the ducting in the cab. Good opportunity to make sure all the doors are working and the hoses are still intact.

I got lucky I gess and the coner was broke off mine so it comes in and out with out to much drama. The only thing about removing the fender well is if it's never been removed you'll be getting the torch out.

Thanks for all the help. I am confident I can handle. it now. It shouldn't be a problem to drop the inner fender. I bought this truck last year. It is a low mileage original with absolutely no rust.
