700r4 speedometer drive gear

i posted this in engine and drivetrain also but thought i would try here too. i was replacing the speedometer drive gear on my 82 blazer's 700r4 and when i removed it the spring clip popped out before i could note which hole it was in. there are two holes it could attach to. does any one know which one is the correct hole or know how to determine which one is ?
