Drive shaft question

OK so I searched and couldn't find what I was looking for, I have a 77 GMC 3/4T 4x4. I am really close to finishing my engine rebuild (nothing special) so I decided to pull the old 305 POS out. Since I have owned this truck I noticed something about the drive shaft that doesn't seem right to me. The slip yoke on the DS is at the diff and not at the transfer case, Does this sound right? While I was under the truck disconnecting the exhaust, torque conv bolts and bell housing bolts etc. etc. I thought I would swap it around, but to no avail the u-joint is way smaller on the diff yoke than the transfer case yoke. OHH yeh I think I have a 203 TC and not a 205 like I expected. The front diff has Warn hubs on it.

Re: Drive shaft question

Typically the slip yoke is at the transfer case, but I don't think it really matters. The NP203 transfer case is a full time transfer case unless someone has changed it over to part time. With locking hubs, I would say that is the case or else you do have a NP205 instead of a NP203. There is a metal tag on it that will tell you which one it is.

Re: Drive shaft question

Yeh 10-4 it was getting dark and I was getting tired working in 95 deg. heat so I will look in the morning for the tag. I read there was a part time kit available at one time for these 203s. If the tag is missing is there another way to tell what it is? I am aware of the 203s and full time 4wd was hoping this truck had a 205. When I bought the truck all I looked at were the locking hubs to make sure it had a 205..... but we'll see.

Re: Drive shaft question

At least one of my trucks has the slip yoke at the rear diff. I used to think it was weird. That's the way the General did it.
