Re: Calling all LS1 converted trucks.

This is the stainless tank that I ordered from Brothers to use on my long bed. I was able to specify what pump I needed and where the filler would be. But it took forever to get it (9-10 weeks!- they said the supplier had trouble getting the correct pump- really put the brakes on the whole thing!) and the quality does not look like the $1k that I spent on it. They also claim that it is an 18-20 gal tank, but it looks more like a 13-15. If it is, they'll be hearing from me! I dont reccomend getting a tank from them at all!

Also included a pic of some of the fuel plumbing...

Re: Calling all LS1 converted trucks.

I used the Painless LS1 extra-length harness (#60509) and mounted it behind the seat after I relocated the tank. As long as you follow the instructions they provide and use the correct brakelight and gear selector combo switch- it works great! It also comes with a VATS bypass (mounted on top of the ECU in the pic) so thats another problem out of the way!

I don't think you'll find one anything cheaper than 600 which is what fuelcell guy done it for plus 50$ for the shipping which is fair I think for the fuel pump/tank!

internal pump is supposed to be the better deal - gas in the tank keeps the pump cool. FCG's tank (which i also used) is a little over $300 by itself, but if you order with the internal pump and sending unit and all that other jazz, it's a little over $600. not a bad deal.

Not sure if thats a good idea. The stock tanks arent baffled. If you do use the stock tank i wouldnt go below 1/4 tank of gas. You dont want to end up sucking air into the fuel system.

I myself still havent decided on which tank to use. I know i want a sumped tank but dont think the budget will allow it ... lol

Someone else around here has done it on two diff't trucks and it worked fine, with minor modification.

Re: Calling all LS1 converted trucks.

Here is a much cheaper option for gas tank. Charlie Bob did this. It is a 99 Camaro Z28 tank turn backwards so that the low part is by the differential.

I origianally used a blazer tank with an Aeromotive a1000 pump. Worked no problems, execpt the dash that I am using does not support the fuel sending unit. I am upgrading to the camaro tank, because it has the right gas sender.

Re: Calling all LS1 converted trucks.

I have barely started mine. I have been trying to get everything I need before I started. So far I am at $3200 for everything except the fuel pump, upper and lower radiator hoses, and exhaust mods. I am keeping my 350 turbo tranny and putting a 2001 LS1 in the truck. I have bought the harness, engine and a 70 chevy( for parts) for $1500. The rest has been misc. parts and odds and ends for the motor.....oh throw about $500 in tools in there too. I will have parts for sale once I am done. Man my garage is full!!!!!!

I had to buy a spacer for the tranny and a flywheel. Bought the harness and pcm with a fuse box all together. PCM is programmed to my tranny, tire size and gear ratio. Wiring harnes has all emitions codes gone except for the top two O2 sensors.

I am hoping to spend less than $4000 on everything once complete. I am doing all the work myself. I will post a conversion thread once complete with the part numbers that I remember or have.

Be prepaired for some work if you are doing it your self!!!

Re: Calling all LS1 converted trucks.

I see nothing wrong with running the stock tank with a external pump. I have read of guys running ext pumps over a 100k miles and still a pumping. My dad is running one on his 66 vette with a stock tank. I myself can't afford $650 plus for a new one but thanks for all the ideas.

Re: Calling all LS1 converted trucks.

there is not a problem with it at all. internal pumps supposedly last longer because of the cooling nature of being submerged in gas.

Re: Calling all LS1 converted trucks.

I think it's a wives tale about the pump lasting longer being submerged in gasoline.

The frame mounted pump has fuel running through it to "cool" it, and the thermal conductivity of the air flowing past the pump is just a bit less than that of gasoline.

Think of the heat that is being added to the fuel through pumping to the fuel rail, and back to the tank.

Given that the fuel and ambient air start at the same temp, the fuel will soon be hotter than the ambient air around the pump.

I don't buy it.

Re: Calling all LS1 converted trucks.

Ok but what about the gas sloshing around in there when you are running low? Wouldnt that cause for some issues?

I mean i am no expert but every motor head i talk to says its better to run a baflled tank rather then not. They also say if you end up sucking air into the fuel system your in for some fun.

which is why i mentioned not to let your gas go lower the 1/4 tank when running stock.

Re: Calling all LS1 converted trucks.

I got me a harness today and a computer from a 98 camaro for $100. I have to go get the motor and get it tore apart so I can take it and get it bored. I also picked up some ls6 injectors for $65 shipped. I need to find a ls6 intake and get me a cam.

Re: Calling all LS1 converted trucks.

for the sake of archiving this stuff, i compiled a list of all of the most recent GenIII buildups I have seen. a lot of people incorrectly refer to it as "LS1 swap", so i'm going to stick to "GenIII" where truck engines are used.

i know i'm going to miss one or two (like the member with the yellow 4x4 truck that i can't think of right now - Bob is his name, i think?), but ... we'll get there, i'll edit it later to add threads.

The guy who gave me the idea - FirstGen - and his GenIII/T56 swap:

A link back to this thread for prosperity and rememberance (in case this gets copied and pasted elsewhere):

I also know a couple other 67-72chevytrucks.com members not represented here with swap threads who have the swap in progress right now:

-> lazybra1n
-> hyde
-> gringoloco
-> Sandemonium

Not sure if this will ultimately help anyone, and I haven't yet raided the LS1tech forums for others out there who've done the swap and have buildup threads, so ... if anyone has something to contribute, please shoot me a PM. I prefer to stick with forum buildup threads rather than personal webpages or photo galleries, because half of the links I have in my original build thread from the past 18 months have been taken offline! The only ones still alive are those at this forum and LS1tech.

If you are doing a buildup thread, for the sake of future reference, PLEASE do not hotlink your images to a personal webpage, upload them to this forum so they stay around - forever - and we never lose em. thanks!
