Quiet down my cab

Hi,

I want to quiet down the cab in my '67 Chevy C10. Right now it's bare metal all around (except for this tar-like insulation on the floor). I'm planning on putting in a new rubber floormat on the floor, but I thought putting some reflective insulation from Home Depot under the floormat would quiet things down even more. I also thought of putting some more insulation behind the door panels...

Are there any other tips you guys have to quieting down my cab, so I can think while driving on the freeway? Thanks!

Re: Quiet down my cab

invest in the Dynamat stuff. It works great as a sound deadener, and as a heat shield. Also, if you haven't done it already, make sure your door seals are good. i replaced mine with the ones from an early '90's suburban, and they just pushed right on to the pinch weld. no gluing. good luck with it, and post some pics when you get a chance.

Re: Quiet down my cab

I used this stuff from McMaster-Carr:

#9709T39
Sound and Vibration Damping Sheet EVA Mastic, .079" Thick, 32" X 54"
In stock at $16.62 Each

And topped it with this:

#9367K65
Foil-Faced Bubble Wrap Insulation 36" Wide, 25 ft Roll Length
In stock at $46.53 Each

...which I glued on with 3M spray adhesive on top of the sound deadener sheets. I put it inside the WHOLE cab top (under the headliner) and bottom, front to back, inside the doors and under the dash. Far cheaper than Dynamat and my truck is so quiet it literally sounds like a Caddy when driving. Not to mention all of my door rubbers and window seals are fairly new as well.

Save some bucks..Dynamat is too expensive (at least for me).
Good luck,
Bud

Re: Quiet down my cab

I wrote a thread about this same subject not too long ago. it seems that everyone has an opinion. After all of my research I decided to go with RAAM MAT. I found that you are paying a lot of money for the name Dynamat, when other products are just as comparable. I found that the butyl sound deadener is the best, but also the most expensive. Second skin got great reveiws, but is extremely expensive. I ended up getting RAAM Mat because it had the best cost/ quality factor for me. I haven't done a complete install in the burb yet, but I have noticed a big difference by just installing it in the cargo area walls. i have nothing in the burb except the front seat and middle seat. No carpet, or door panels. It is a 402 BBC with Dual Dynomax exhaust. Needless to say it was load, and still is fairly loud inside, but it has went down significantly. JMHO.

Re: Quiet down my cab

Hmmm, how about Rhino Lining? Anyone ever use this inside their cab and notice if it helped reduce the road noise? I am assuming it would, the stuff in my old truck bed was almost 1/4" thick, heck I bet if someone did a frame-off and Rhino'd both the inside AND the bottom it would really work well, not to mention helping to keep your rig from rusting out...any thoughts on this?

Re: Quiet down my cab

Rhino and other bed liners have been used in street rods for several years. It does cut road noise and makes a cab seem more solid.I have not had one done but rode in one and it seemed way more solid than others I've been in.It might also have been the build, but I tend to think the Rhino was what quieted it.

I would agree about the RHino too for sure but I think the poster is looking for a more cost-effective solution to his dilemma. After all, Rhino=$$$

Re: Quiet down my cab

I invested in Second skin...note the word INVESTED...because it was pricey.
I did research it throughly at the SoundDeadenerShowdown site plus visiting many other sites.

I am convinced the $ is going to prove well spent; not for the results especially (though they should prove top-drawer), but also the longevity of the product. I will probably always own the truck and don't want to mess with a failed product installed after my cab is reassembled.

Also, consider the fact that just patches of any sound deadener can reduce the noise in the cab.
...sympathetic noises can be slowed with sound deadening.

If you check out some sites related to sound transmission in duct work (household), you can better get a grasp of the mechanics of how weird noises can travel.

PS--for a deal, look on the board, CL or eBay for your final choice

..and there is my .02 worth

Re: Quiet down my cab

If you are on a budget, go to Home Depot and get what I did....basically foil bubble wrap on a roll....25' x2' for about $10. Got some 3m spray adhesive and locked it down under the carpet...easy and QUIET!

Re: Quiet down my cab

I bought 2 rolls of this stuff and will hopefully install it over the Christmas weekend.

This price is good and the seller's reviews are excellent.

I'll posting for some install tips and advise next week...

Re: Quiet down my cab

i used the do it yourself roll on bedliner called herculiner. I applied to both the bottom of the cab as well as the floor on the inside. After that i installed a carpet insulation under the carpet and it is pretty darn quiet inside. I also used the bedliner for the bottom side of the bed and the wheelwells, looks good and is very durable

Thumbs up Re: Quiet down my cab

Thanks for your great responses.

Yes, I am on the cheap. I think I'll get this stuff (if that's a good idea):

Re: Quiet down my cab

Also did the DIY liner on the entire floor of my '70. can't say it really quietted down much, but i didn't put carpet down either. i was pretty much in it for the durability... and i like the small block sound.

Re: Quiet down my cab

I did my cab floor, kick panels and the tops of the rockers with Herculiner , two full coats took two quarts. It was on sale at Napa when I bought it and it was less than $50.00 for for the two quarts. It came out real nice and the floor definitly seems stiffer, this stuff seems real tough, if you drag your knuckles across it you will draw blood. This is the third cab floor replacement I have done in the 34 years I have owned this truck and I came to the conclusion that in Pennsylvania carpet, floor mats and sound deadeners can also be called floor rotters.

Hope this helps
Bill

I did the same thing as Kelly and it worked wonders!

Vortex is what I have on/in my bed, and it's gonna go on the cab floor and behind the gas tank when the body work is done and it's time to do it.

That is the same stuff I am thinking about using in mine. When you install it could you take some pictures and let us know how well it works? I am a little concerned about the thickness of it when installing it.

Thanks-

I went to Home Depot and they didn't have that stuff, the closest to it was pipe insulator in 12"x15' rolls. I later looked on Amazon and there's this great looking stuff, actually made for what we want to use it for:

Amazon.com: CSI 25070 Heat Shield Insulation: 4... Amazon.com: CSI 25070 Heat Shield Insulation: 4...
I'm buying this tonight, and will let you guys know how it turned out once I install it.

Re: Quiet down my cab

For a cheap DIY sound deadener its either home depot or lowes sells a product called peal and seal. its an asphault type base with adhesive on one side and a foil liner on the other. On my s10 blazer my mufflers are very close to the floor and i put one layer in the rear passenger area and it helped alot. I have no experience with other "pricey" deadener but for 10 bucks a roll it made my truck bearable and kept my floor way cooler

Re: Quiet down my cab

Okay! I'm all done! I bought the insulation from Amazon, it is great stuff. After it was in, I put in a rubber floor mat that I purchased earlier. Take a look:

Thanks for your advice, you steered me in the right direction.
