Re: Matt's 74 Bronco

I am getting ready to "RePaint" my parents 72 Bronco. They bought one about 4-6 months ago that seems to be in good shape, but they PAID for it. the problem is that it is not RED, my mothers favorite color.

I honestly hope that i dont find any rust like what you have hear when i start the tear down to prep it for paint.

I will be keeping an eye on your build. I have always wanted one of these broncos but as 67 said, they are not cheap. I do run across one at least every month for the 1500-5000$ range but they look like more work than i have time for. maybe I will jump on one and just buy all the replacement panels rather than try to fix the basket case. good dreams and all that i guess. lol

keep up the good work and keep posting, i cant wait to see how this turns out.

Re: Matt's 74 Bronco

I was curious tho.

how difficult is it to replace the quarter panels? my parents is a 72 and has the fuel filler necks, I (and i mean I) prefer the gas doors like the 76? have. plus their rear fenders are cut with flares and that looks like crap IMO, two birds one stone and all that.

Re: Matt's 74 Bronco

First, Thank's for checking out the build.
This one has the filler neck's coming out of the quarter as well,I have marked them to be drilled. Will tackle that later
As far as the panels go...This thing has been a Monster to rebuild so far,It is a huge puzzle and pieces are over this panel but under this one and you really have to think before cutting.
As I stated earlier in the build there is NO inner structure holding these together, meaning you cut something loose and things start to move on you. Just be careful and plan things out.

Re: Matt's 74 Bronco

Update time..

Pic #1. So I got started on the floors Tuesday and it started off ok, in this first shot all was going good.

Pic #2. When these go together pieces go under one and then under another panel and is a puzzle and the pieces I have, some are bowed not bent correctly etc.
Making it difficult to assemble.

Pic #3. It's hard to see all the humps and lumps in these pics. but let me tell you there is alot of waves going on. This shot shows how things are a bit Wonky.

Pic #4. After fighting with this most of the morning I was able to get the floors fitting decent.

Pic #5. And by end of Day I had this (All mock up at this point) It wall all be blown apart and prepped to be welded.

Till I tried to fit the door and things got silly, and I spent most of Wednesday trying to get it all lined out and had to go take pics of a Friends Bronco and measurements to see if I was on the right track.
Good news was it was right on it needed some adjusting and it was lined up.

So I took things apart last night so I can start the prep work.

Till next time.

Re: Matt's 74 Bronco

Pic #1. On the list for yesterday was getting the seat pan flat or (flat-ish) So my solution was to cut the upper section (piece on left)
By doing this it helped to get it to lay flatter, followed by the tractor weights to help force it down.

Pic #2. This was after the 2 braces were welded to the pan and ready to mockup.

Pic #3. I had to prep all the panels on the edges for welding and here it had a patch to be taken care of.

Pic #4. The passenger side floor pan welded in (on the rails Eastwood encapsulator was used before welding)

Pic #5. The drivers side was also installed and now ready for the seat pan.

Looking good, the owner was fortunate to find someone like you with the skills to do this job. I hope he realizes how much time this kind of rebuild takes.

Re: Matt's 74 Bronco

Nice work Mark. Reading along and noted where you checked measurements on a friends Bronco...had no doubt you were headed in right direction. And glad you confirmed that.

Lotta places wouldn't have the skills ...or the stones...to take this on.

Re: Matt's 74 Bronco

These were taken from Friday afternoon.

Pic #1. After I had the floor pan all flat it didn't line up with the holes!!
Come to find out because it was so warped when it was finally flat it moved enough to make it off just enough.
So it all was taken apart and redone and this time I drilled the holes and then clamped it all together then welded the brace on.

Pic #2. In this pic you can't see it but it had a buckle to it and the weights helped take that out during the welding process, now it's ready for the inner rockers and then the quarter panel mockup.

There are a lot of talented people on here, but to basically build a new Bronco, you are at the top of the list right now!!

Re: Matt's 74 Bronco

Pic #1 This is the upper quarter/inner fender
I know sounds odd but this was the way these are built.

Pic #2. These are the other pieces to assemble the quarter.
B-pillar, support brace, tail light housing and rear support structure

Pic #3. These are the pieces clamped together...upper quarter, lower quarter,B-pillar,and rear support.
It's a huge puzzle to get this put together and thinking of what step is next.

Pic #4. The rear support was then drilled and held together with Cleko's

Pic #5. This odd piece fills the gap between the upper quarter and the B-pillar!
um...just make it 1 piece on the B-pillar!?

So after fighting with the assembly of the parts it finally went together.Till next time

Re: Matt's 74 Bronco

That is some major sub-assembly. We're there any instructions or assembly manual information for this one? Nice work on complicated pieces.

Re: Matt's 74 Bronco

NOT one single thing to go off of except the old body...

There is some pics and videos on line but nothing in detail, what I have been posting has more instructions than I have been able to find.
It's one piece at a time slow and steady

Re: Matt's 74 Bronco

I have done a fair amount of work since the last update just putting together then taking apart and checking to see what needs adjusting.
Pic #1. The quarter panels set in place for fitment.

Pic #2. The fenders and doors set in place to see how the lines were working out, and it has some issues with some things just not right.
Not sure if it's some of the new "repop" pieces or what it is but they will need to be addressed.

Pic #3. After figuring out some of the things that needed attention I was able to take the rear floor section back out so I could get the brace welded in.

Pic #4. Then I had to remake the brace for the gas line and body brace.

Pic #5. This is the new brace welded in.
It ties the inner rocker, floor, center brace and the quarter together and also needs the large holes in it for the fuel hose to pass through.

As of last night I have the panels fitting fairly decent with some issues at the fender to door areas that need to be fixed, once that is done then I can finally start to get the quarter panels welded together.

Re: Matt's 74 Bronco

Pic #1. I ended up have to use a new B pillar the first one didnt fit very good (diff manufacturer ) and was causing issues.

Pic #2. The customer got me a new front fender (stock was pretty bad) and then the fun started to get this thing to fit. The main issue was the middle of the door and fender didnt match up to well so I had to cut, grind, weld etc to get it to fit and in this shot it shows the hinge with (pins for alignment) drill a hole all the way through and slide these in to align you door.

Pic #3. Sorry didnt take before pic, But trust me when I say it had 1/2" of stick out! over the door.
This shows the line nice and tight.

Re: Matt's 74 Bronco

Back to work...
I was very busy yesterday working on the quarter panels etc. and was able to get alot done.

Pic #1. Started with the passenger side brace.

Pic #2. Then welded the floor in.

Pic #3. (Will not show all the welding) But I welded the quarter panels up all 110 spot welds per side!! with wheel tub.

Pic #4. The passenger side set in place and checked fitment of the boxes (small pieces in front and back of tub) so far so good.

Pic #5. And finally the Drives side set in place for fitting. Have some minor issues nothing to bad though. The boxes set in place and the light colored pieces are for the gas filler tubes.

Re: Matt's 74 Bronco

Pic #1 The passenger side rocker set in place and looking pretty good and ready for final install.

Pic #2. The 2nd view, everything is lined up pretty nice.

Pic #3. All welded in. I did have to do some slice & dice to get it to flow but nothing I haven't had to do with every rocker I've installed.

I will note: The B pillar had to be welded in solid before the rocker goes in to make it all solid.

Pic #4. That being said this was passenger side B pillar and the front box welded in place.

Pic #5. The Drivers side B pillar all welded up and the rocker being fit (black paint is Eastwood encapsulator)

It was a very productive day, I also set the tailgate in place for test fit and all looks pretty good so far.

Till next time ..

Re: Matt's 74 Bronco

So....back to the rocker saga.

Pic #1. The lower section (I split the top from bottom) Went on really smooth, The top section however was not so easy. In this shot I made my first piece at 24" long and snapped it (my break is 24) do to the stock piece was not fitting and I had a ton of spot welds to drill out.

Pic #2. This shows more of what I was talking about. The rocker was misshaped and needed to be addressed so this is how I did it.

Pic #3. The front section was cut into (and hand made pieces) then welded up.

Pic #4. The end result..I have cleanup to do but will wait so I can move the rear of the truck.

Pic #5. Then I moved to the back end of the truck and started to fit the tailgate and tail light housings, They didn't look to bad will need some TLC to get them right.
