gas tanks

i am picking up parts here and there for when i get another truck. me and my dad redid a 68 swb about 10yrs ago and i sold it cause i was 16 and didn't know anybetter. anyway when we changed the gas tank the filler neck stuck out more than the origional one in it so we put another one and it didn't stick and was flush with the rubber seal. what are the diffrences in gas tanks? I've seen trucks around and some filler necks stick out past the rubber and some don't!! thanks
