Single-Action Shocks?

Hi -

I'm in the middle of a frame-off restoration on a '49 Chevy 3/4-Ton pickup. I'm trying to maintain a nostalgic hot rod feel with a 261 six and the stock 4-speed manual transmission. The '49 has the original single-action shocks. I have been thinking about "upgrading" to the more modern double-action shocks. Has anyone out there done this before? Will the ride be substantially improved over single-action shocks?

Thanks!
Dan M.
