Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?

Hey Tigger, what size tire is that, I'm trying to determine the largest tire that will fit on a short bed mounted in the same location. Thanks. BTW, I like your wingnut setup better than the factory double nut.

Reading through thread I thought I'd post a spid pic for I truck I have with E81 wood floor and it shows the RPO Code P13 for the spare tire carrier which is mounted on drivers side between wheel well housing and cab.

Here's an example of the 9/16" carriage bolt for the 71-72 3/4-1t applications.

Does anyone know if the carriers were painted then installed or painted ahead of install? Mostly I'm curious if the Phillip head bolts were painted or not.

I am excited about the parts I got from LockDoc, though it seems like I did not get "Phillip head bolts" but I guess that is not going to be a big deal.

As luck has it (or bad depending on your view) I had to get a replacement tailgate and during its paint I am having my bracket painted, along with the hardware. But not the carriage bolt/lock.

You didn't get "Philips head bolts" because I didn't have any.

Very few of them I have seen actually have the philips head screws at the top. Here is the picture of the one I sold Rich (first two pictures) and one I still have on a short bed side. If you notice, both of them have hex head bolts in them. They are also mounted the opposite way on each bed side and one is mounted on the passengers side ahead of the wheel well and one is mounted on the passengers side behind the wheel well. Obviously there is every configuration under the sun because a lot of them were added by the owners.

Last picture is a picture of the screw mentioned in a couple of posts that looks the same as the original philips head screw for the tire bracket. It has a flatter head but I'm sure no one would notice that unless you are going for a 100 point restoration.

Good question. Judging by many accessories I'm betting they were sprayed installed.

I always had the impression the top of the brackets were installed with the #3 phillips, but picture #3 & #4 in post 85 look right to me too, on the assumption they're GR 5 bolts. Similar bolts were used for the front bed panel (e.g., "RBM"), for example.

Doc makes a good point, many were installed post factory.

The 68 50 th has the original Phillips head screws but I’m missing the round washer and they put a wing nut on it I’ll have to start looking for both. Looks like it’s been modified to add a lock . Going to remove the added metal when I start on it . It’s original as it’s on the spid.

Looking at the very first picture in this thread it would appear that example was painted off the vehicle given the breadth of coverage (if that's original paint). I've got a spare here that I'll check - would be curious what others note.

The bolts on the Blue one are grade 5.

Fastenal has the 5/16 inch "Round Head" Philips machine screws in stainless or Zinc plated. I bet any well stocked hardware store would have them too.

Does anyone know what length the upper and lower mounting bolts for the bracket should be? I notice LockDoc mentioned 5/16" in an earlier post so I assume that's the diameter.

Also, if anyone prefers the look of the lower profile Phillips head screw for the top of the bracket, I found something that might be of interest. By doing a little Googling and comparing images found against the ones in this thread, the most similar profile is something called a "Phillips Truss Head" machine screw. They look like this. The truss head screws have a wide, lower profile head. I do realize that the truss head screws don’t have the flat area where the Phillips “cross” is on the factory screws but the overall look is pretty close.

If a philips then the top screws are 5/16-18 x 3/4. The bottom are carriage bolts you'd find along the perimeter floor. That said, I saw someplace the "kit" included a spacer of some sort used where a hole is drilled through the bed floor. The bolt for that hole may have some variance I suppose, but it's still a carriage bolt.


Changed my guess on how they're painted, now agree with deadhead - seems they would be painted off the truck, a little tough to spray the back well enough while mounted. Best to paint parts disassembled anyway, no matter what the factory did.........more or less

Hey Doc, if I remember right the heads on the #3 Philips are called Truss Heads. They're not flat, more a slice off a circle. They're technically stamped "E" by my experience I'll post one at some point. Edit: Your last picture in post 85 is the correct "E" screw, or bolt what have you.

My 71 truck used the same screws for the jack accessories spring, the heat shield and tailgate handle. I'm only guessing this truck used those screws on the top for the tire carrier. I see my OP is wrong, I recall removing the original carrier and hardware, it's more I threw it all away Installing another, got to have a P13, or whatever it is The truck will likely never see a spare though

I used 5/16” Phillips head bolts l bought at the local Ace- don’t remember if they’re stainless? I painted everything separately, then assembled it
