Do you have the site windows on the side of the bowls? mis-adjusted float level can cause various issues.

Others are also on the right track with the fuel line size, etc... Do you know if the acc pump has been changed out for a bigger diaphram?
Bad accelerator pump will caus this...

Re: Drag racing

Post up a few pictures of your "race truck" I would think you might be better off learning more about the mechanics and what works and what doesn't before you start drag racing anything ! It's a LOT more than just buying a friends "race truck " and having someone "race tune it " jumping in the drivers seat and stomping on the pedal of a machine you know nothing about . It's a disaster waiting to happen and if your lucky the only thing you'll break will be truck parts and not body parts !

Brakes ?
Suspension ?
Tires ?
safety equipment ?

NEVER RUN RUBBER FUEL LINES . pushing more fuel is usually the cause of an off the line stumble rather than the cure , We all like to have fun , Don't let it kill you !

What year and model truck ?

Re: Drag racing

It's a 84 chevy long box c10. With disc and drum brakes. 1/2 ton suspension. I have a pair of ps5860 sport drag tires on it. And I don't have safety equipment besides the seat belts that came with the truck.

Re: Drag racing

ok you have a stock 5000 lb 86 with a 355 and sticky back tires and the aerodynamics of a brick , what trans ? have you gone thru the driveline and rear diff/axles yet ? because if you do get it to run right and actually hook up your going to leave lots of little parts at the line starting with the driveshaft / universals . I'm guessing at maybe 16:00 seconds in the quarter ? that's pretty close to what my stock 95 Z-71 would do .It takes a lot of modifications to get these old trucks race ready, lots of guys have done it but it's not cheap or easy .

Re: Drag racing

Sometimes when you see hoofprints you gotta think horses, not zebras. Probably as simple as the timing is off or (most likely) the accelerator pump has failed or is out of adjustment.

But did I read that right? 355 with camel hump heads running 10s in one of our trucks? That's pretty amazing. Imagine if it didn't bog... maybe 9s?

Re: Drag racing

Yes you did read it right. I only high school drag I can only do 85 in the 1/8 mile. My dad takes it and test runs it and in the quarter mile it hits around 120. It has no nitrous or super charger just a super fast 355 and a super quick get up and go.

Re: Drag racing

Well the high school drag regulations says u can't run any faster than 8.20 so I stay safe by running less than that.

Re: Drag racing

Take about 580 horsepower to push a 4000 pound truck to 120 in the quarter.

How'd you get 580 horsepower out of a classic smallblock with old iron heads?

Re: Drag racing

I run it that fast by spending lots of time and money into it. I also have upgraded the power by reducing weight by taking old heavy stuff out and putting lighter equip in it.

Your in High school and I'm sure your having fun with it so don't pay any mind to us old guys ! we're just ribbing you a little for fun . As long as your happy with it that's all that matters . there are a lot of guys in here that can give you more information than you'll ever want about these old trucks so make use of it . Some of us grew up driving these 67-72 trucks when they were brand new . My son was born before your truck was built .
