special-K, look where I went yesterday.

I couldn't get off the road safely, to get a picture with the sign to prove I was there.

Re: special-K, look where I went yesterday.

That's cool. Any idea how the place got its name?

Re: special-K, look where I went yesterday.

Nobody seems to know how it got it's name.

Ozone has a population of 600-700 people, and lays in some of the prettiest country around.

On pretty days, there will be several people at the Burger Barn.

Sounds like a neat place. The burger barn looks especially nice......

I don't know why I have never floated the Mulberry. I need to get on that.

I have camped and rode ATV's all around it.

Oark is just north of Clarksville Larry, not too far from your family.

We used Turner Bend for outfitter, Very nice folks. We tried hauling our own canoes down a couple of years, and soon decided it was easier to use an outfitter. We hit Buffalo, Big Piney, Illinois Bayou, but the Mulberry became our favorite.
Have not canoed you're area for 15-20 years, but it remains one of my favorite parts of the country.

We used to haul our own canoes, but, as you said, it gets real complicated fast. It's much cheaper in the long run to rent.

Re: special-K, look where I went yesterday.

Like Larry, I have never canoed the Mulberry and don't know why. I've done Buffalo, Spring, Kings, Illinois Bayou, Caddo, Strawberry, etc. but never the Mulberry.

Wife and I are going to make a drive tomorrow, look at fall colors, and maybe mark a waterfall off our list to visit. Not sure where just yet, but I'm not staying around the house and working.

Here is a photo of one of my favorite places in Arkansas. This creek feeds the lower Buffalo.

Re: special-K, look where I went yesterday.

That looks like a spot in a picture Other Larry has shown. Could be typical topography tho'.

When I first started talking to davischevy I told him how I took a side trip in Arkansas from I-40 on a trip to Arizona and how I loved what I saw. The town Ozone really left an impression with it's "still the same" vibe with old country store with enamel pop signs and surface rusted old '50s cars and trucks with tired old paint (they call that patina now) sitting waiting for a new life. That was quite a while back now but he says, all things considered, it still has that flavor. Thanks for the refresh. I think the name probably came from that mountain air around there.

Looks beautiful in those pictures. We have vacationed in the NW part of Arkansas many times and love it there. We have passed through '56' Arkansas - population 5 underfed dogs. Stayed at the lodge at Queen Wilhelmina state park and many others.

Ozone reminds me of the joke about the town so small that both city limit signs were on the same pole!

Re: special-K, look where I went yesterday.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of similar scenes in north central, northwest, and southwest Arkansas. Places you can still get lost and not see a soul all day. That place in my photo is one. Takes about an hour to hike there after you drive until the road ends. That’s my wife in the photo. Been going there for over a decade and never see anyone else.

I grew up in an area a lot like Ozone and 56 in north central Arkansas. Man, it was a good place and time to be alive. My buddies and I were camping, fishing, and hunting alone when we were about 12. Spent spring break in a cabin on a creek with my two best buddies when I was 14 and never saw another person all week.

Sounds pretty idyllic and much like my growing up experience in a small Missouri town with 900 population in the 60's. Didn't worry about being in the wrong part of town or gangs etc. Nice time to be born.
