47-55.1 Truck weight.

Hopefully in a couple of weeks it will be warm enough to start tearing down my 53 that I bought in 1980. I will be putting it on wheel scales before I start just for a baseline. I have been told that the 53 model 3100 should weigh about 3150 pounds. Does the model 3600 weigh 3600 pounds and so on? I need to get a life.

Click Archives, click Vehicle information kits, open the Chevy truck link and scroll down to the right year and open it. Then scroll down to shipping and curb weights for the right model. It will be below the drawings for the particular model.
As many times as I went across the scales in mine at the dump or at the scrap yard those numbers are pretty accurate.

Not a silly question at all. I hit the GM archives several times a week to find the correct answers to questions. Some years have more info than others but it is one of the best resources.

I use my truck a lot for hauling gravel, top soil, etc and when on the scale with one person onboard, the tare weight averages 3500. Without me, I'd say around 3,330 (depending on how much beer and pizza I had the night before and how much gas is currently in the tank).

3330 is right in the ballpark for most 3100 trucks. After that it is the details on modified trucks that add or reduce weight.

I took my mom's 77 F 250 to the dump one day and the scrap yard the next a few months ago and there was a 500 lb difference between the scales but I figured that the scrap yard scale was spot on. It was the one that weighed lighter. At the dump you only cared about the difference between loaded and empty and I seldom go over the minimum in that truck anyhow.

You didn't mention if you have a 3100 or 3600(?) I put my bone stock '50 3600 on a scale recently. Stock front and rear bumpers, 4speed SM420, under bed spare tire and jack, recirc heater, stock split rim wheels, empty bed. Just the truck with my weight subtracted: 3950lbs.

I'll be starting on my 53 3100 shortly. I will weigh all 4 corners and each part I remove as I tear it down just for future reference. I'm interested in the final weight after modification and need to keep the proper weight distribution.

It depends on how complete the rolling chassis is. I used to be able to pick up a 3100 frame and carry it around the shop by hand by myself. Can't anymore though.,

Complete rolling chassis with engine and trans probably around 1700 lbs. Most of that in the engine and trans.

Here is the weight of the striped 292 head. Ported polished with big valves but that should not make much difference. 49.60 pounds.

Might be a half pound different than mine if I stripped it down and weighed it. It would be interesting if you had done a before and after weight in though.

and yet my dd 09 sierra lwb 4x4 weighs an astonishing 5200 lbs. a lot of that must be in padding for that cozy electric seat

OEM rear fender for my 1953 3100, 17.50 lbs. This is a fender I bought on ebay for $200 delivered. It's in pretty good shape and doesn't seem to have much filler on it but quite a bit of paint. I wonder what a reproduction weighs? It bounced around from 17.5 to 18.5 on the scale as I tried to balance it and take the picture at the same time.

That is a pretty nice looking fender that shouldn't be hard to get to the point it is a great looking fender. I've no idea of the weight of a repro fender. Truthfully I have never knowingly had my hands on one. Shipping weight isn't much info on some things as the packaging might weigh as much or more as what is in it.

The little dent in it may have happened in shipping or I may have done it. I bought it when I was working in Minnesota and it got moved around the job site for a few months. Still a good deal I think.

Stock 292, dry,no manifolds or starter. Flywheel installed. 189.0 lbs.
Intake and exhaust manifolds + carb. 36.25 lbs.
Delco starter. 20.25 lbs.
This is a complete running stock engine. I have never ran the serial numbers on it but it was green when I got it. If you look close in the back I finally found a use for a box end metric wrench. These things are hard to pick up. I tared the rig before lifting.

I'm getting ready to paint my transmission so I did some weighing. I was surprised that the brake disk was not much lighter, it is a 12.88" disk. The disk has studs in it but the drum doesn't. The transmission has a mid-shift kit and is dry with mount installed.
GM TKO 600 5 speed, 101.85 pounds.
Stock front brake drum and hub, 53 Chevy 3100, no studs, 18.40 pounds.
Wilwood 12.88" disk rotor and hub with studs, 17.3 pounds.

I scaled my 53 3100 today. Disclaimers: stock except, no water in radiator, battery a little small, rear end replaced with 12 bolt and open drive line. I calculated 96 pounds for white oak bed and hardware and put it in the middle of the bed in steel. There is no wood or hardware in the bed. No driver. I found it pretty amazing how well balanced this old truck is. I leveled the truck and aired the tires. These are quality race scales.
#1. Total weight.
#2. Front, rear.
#3. Left, right.
#4. Rear left, front right.
#5. Rear right, front left.
