Still not done ... haven't touched it in a while.... (very patient customer)

The entire rear suspension will be reconfigured to a TRUE four link to eliminate the panhard bar and its "pull" ....

Updates soon !

Re: 1971 FORD LTD gets HYDROS !!

Nice!! Cool project on an overlooked car...Alot of those late 60 early 70s full size rides would lend themselves to this treatment. Anyway, I like the attn to detail, and all the pics. They clarified some stuff I always wondered about. Getting the little helper involved was nice, too. I gotta get a project going to get mine involved in. Keep up the good work!!

Re: 1971 FORD LTD gets HYDROS !!

Thanks everyone for the kind words !! There has been alot of work done to the car, in fact it is almost done.

It has been a looonnng drawn out project (due to the past BS in my life) however, it is close to being done.

It is currently at home in my garage so I can get more done in the evenings...

Pics to follow !!

Re: 1971 FORD LTD gets HYDROS !!

BACK IN SEPT, 2010....

When we last left off, I had the 'juice' going up and down (with jumper cables, anyway)

I knew from the start the rear-suspension was going to have a problem (as many do with the use of long travel hydro cylinders combined with a track/panhard bar)
-
-
-
Mega side pull at full 'lock-up':
-
-

-

-

-

-

-
Notice angle of cylinders ...
-

-

-

-
SO.....we decided a TRUE fourlink was in order !!!

I got sick of using jumper cables to raise and lower the suspension ... .... so it was time to wire the solenoids and dump valves...

Switches mount and Fancy wheel.... I do not like mountes switched, I prefer the set in your lap style box, with a long cord so you can play with it outside...

A couple months ago, I decided to bring it home so I could work on it more when time allows, and free up the shop to get back on the Vette...
-

-

-

-
Rich supplied me with the 2 ga welding cable, lugs and disconnect...and I scored on some cool shrink wrap...

Four batterys go in ....

And the crimping begins...

Re: 1971 FORD LTD gets HYDROS !!

I like this car ALOT! You're doing some nice work!

Years ago, I used to be one of those white guys who never fully appreciated the lowrider style. Then, I started looking at them a lot closer, and was blown away at the attention to detail and the passion that those guys have. Now, if there's a lowrider at a show, I'll always check it out. Some of the level of detail those guys go to is amazing. And the paint........OMG! Now, whenever we go the Grand National Roadster Show at Pomona, I'm always excited to go to the building where the lowriders are. I spend a lot of time in that building checking those cars out. I love all the airbrush work, especially anything done by my all-time favorite airbrush guy, Mr. Cartoon. He did an ice cream truck a few years ago that was so amazing that I can't even put it into words. The entire exterior was a mural of killer clowns taking over the world. It sounds weird, but it was incredible. It had a crowd of people around it with their jaws on the floor.

Can't wait to see what's next on the LTD!

Re: 1971 FORD LTD gets HYDROS !!

Thanks man !!

I know exactly what you mean about the detail, and know exactly the ice cream van your talking about !!

Sometimes 'Lowriders' would get a rap for all show and no go....some times you still see ghetto rolling down the road, but for the most part, they are really, really nice !!

Nice car.I like impalas but its nice to see a ford lowrider. It looks like you cut the coils in half. Will the hydros allow it to drop extremely low or or do have to chop more coils?

Re: 1971 FORD LTD gets HYDROS !!

It sits pretty low already. The front has a pretty good stack already (becase they are of heavy tonage).

The front crossmemeber is 3/4" from touching the ground.

The rear however, is 2" from touching the bumpstops !!!

So, this means I could get the rear to drop almost another 5" before "frame" mods would be needed.

However, I am setting this up so if there is ever a failure of the system (rare with current technology) ie: car dropped and could not be lifted, or failed hose, etc. .... the LTD could be driven home.

Since my last post, the car had been completed and will leave my house tommorow !!!

Picked up this custom driveline, thanks to SouthBayDriveline ... Great Job !!

A custom "spring slip" !!!

-

-

-

-
-
Clearanced the rear firewall a bit ... Just opened up existing holes ...
-
-

-

-
Washed the entire car, including the trunk with soap and water, bled the brakes and went for a test drive ...
-
-

-

-

-

-
-
Driveline worked out great !!! No vibes at any height !!!
