7.5" & 7.62" 10 bolt questions.

First off, I know these rears are weak, Just trying to get a posi cheap with with what i have.
I got my 79 Olds running, Fun to drive other than the 2.73:1 open 7.5" 10 bolt. I have a complete 7.62" 10 bolt posi 3.42:1 rear out of a 02 Trans Am, Question is will the carrier & gears fit my 7.5" 10 bolt?

Yes....I know how to install gears & have all the tools, Just dont want to waste time if they dont swap.

If they dont....What cars came with a 8.5" 10 bolt that will fit my G body? I know GN & turbo regals had them...But that stuff is hard to find.

I can tell you that any B or D-body from '94-96 can come with a 10 bolt 8.5" rear --- but only a certainty if it is a limited slip (posi) unit. B/D-body is the Chevy Caprice, Buick Roadmaster, and Caddy Fleetwood. GM offered both limited slip and open diffs those years -- but did not offer a B or D-body with RPO G80 (limited slip) those years ('94-96) that was not 8.5". However, the open diffs were sometimes the smaller 7.XX". So make sure you can confirm it's a G80 unit and you will be good to go. One thing to note, those 8.5" posi units were Auburn units and do not hold up to abuse. Even if you get a good one, a few uneven burnouts will kill it (and they are not serviceable). If you have the cash, and you end up with one of these, it is better to replace the carrier with an Eaton (serviceable) unit. I once gave a burned up G80 unit out of one of my 9C1s to a mechanic who put it in his G-body. I told him it was toast, but he didn't care. To this day, I don't understand why he wanted a worn out unit, maybe perhaps it was the cheapest way he could go with 8.5" gears?

Your saying a 94-96 B-body rear whould fit? If I had a 8.5" 10 bolt case I whouldnt have a problem spending the money on a good posi carrier & new gears, But not going to sink any money in the 7.5".
Arent the B-body rears wider than a G-body.

I think the older model 7.5 had different spline axles. maybe 26 vs. 28
