292 I6 to 4.3 V6 engine swap

Morning to everybody:

After 4 days of searching (2 here & 2 via google) I have not been able to find the answer to the question of how to mount the 4.3 to the '79 P10 chassis.

I have a 1979 Chevy P10 with a 292 I6 (froze solid) with a TH350 transmission & would like to replace it with a beefed up 4.3 V6, I have the complete wiring harness & computer, that I have I the back corner of the garage.

This is just going to be a weekend fishing rig, so I don't see the need to stuff my 327 into it.

From the bell housing to the rear end I see no problems, but the problem I can not find a cure for is, how do I mount the engine to the frame short of making my own mounts. Is there a bolt on solution to this problem? I am drawing a blank on this one.

Thanks for any & all responses

Andy

How's the 292 mounted?
If it's side mounts you likely only need to move the passenger side forward.
The 4.3 is just a 305 with the front 2 cylinders lopped off. Mounts are in the same place as any smallblock.

Re: 292 I6 to 4.3 V6 engine swap

The 4.3 V6 has the engine mounts farther back towards the transmission than a small block.

You might be able to use a set of typical V8 mounts and move them back with a plate under the bottom bolted or welded to the crossmember.

I do know that the 4.3 was available from the factory in a '86 K10. If it was also available in the mid '80's C10's a set of those mounts would be what you need.

The 4.3 V6 has a 4" bore and a 3.48" stroke, the same as a 350..........

If anything if moving a mount would do it, I think I will need to move one back, because the engine mounts are closer to the bell housing than on the V8's. But moving it back might work.

Captainfab:
When you say a plate under the V8 mounts, is that to be used as a spacer? I was wondering if the frame might be based on the 1 ton chassis for these little boxes. It did appear to be a little taller than my '70 at that point.

Thank You both for your responses

Re: 292 I6 to 4.3 V6 engine swap

Sorry I wasn't clearer. The plate I mentioned will be needed to support the bottom of the engine mount brackets as they will no longer be 100% on the crossmember. The plate will need to be bolted or welded onto the crossmember. You may also need a gusset or two on the bottom against the crossmember. This is basically what GM did on the '88 & up trucks with the 4.3 V6.

Captainfab:

Got it now. Did not think about the angle of the mount at the bottom where it mounts to the cross member. And gussets will most diffently be needed along with the bottom plate for strength.

Thanks

Re: 292 I6 to 4.3 V6 engine swap

Just a heads up, if you're somewhere that requires smog every other year you need to swap ALL the emissions stuff from the donor vehicle to get signed off by a BAR ref. I believe the donor has to be no older, and maybe the same class of vehicle (not sure on that one).

Not what you asked, just don't want you to do a bunch of work to end up with something you can't drive.

slotard:

This rig was transferred between family members & will never have to see a smog check station. Where I am at, when you buy it, it is checked & never has to see a smog check again until you sell it out of family.

Thanks for thinking about me thou

Re: 292 I6 to 4.3 V6 engine swap

Continuing my research on this engine swap
I seen a picture posted by DirtyLarry on 3/23/12 (sorry I don't know how to move it) showing 4.3l mounts in a '93. I thought I might be able to use those frame brackets on my '79 crossmember, with miinor modifications, to mount the 4.3l into the '79. This would keep the parts darn near all stock.
Anybody have any thoughts on this idea.
Thanks
Andy

Re: 292 I6 to 4.3 V6 engine swap

Well it has been awhile (family matters) but it is done. Moved stands to rear, front hole to rear hole. Made & installed 2 brackets from stands to front crossmember. Finally opened up 2 holes in trans crossmember & were done.
Many thanks to geezer#99 & Captainfab fortheir help.

What have you done with the exhaust? IIRC, 4.3L truck manifolds interfere with the frame

Re: 292 I6 to 4.3 V6 engine swap

The motor I am using is out of an S10 4x4 Blazer. The exhaust manifolds exit high at the bell housing & engine connection. I will start with the stock crossover pipe which exits down the passenger side. The engine also came with a set of headers which also connects to the crossover pipe. We will see about the headers. Good luck

Re: 292 I6 to 4.3 V6 engine swap

sorry for the delay, been sick.
I moved the motor mount stands back 1 hole to the rear, drilled 1 hole in the top of the frame & added a boxed gusset to the cross member to support the hole hanging in space and it bolts up like it was made that way stock.
If I had left the stands where they were I could have just a V8 into it.

I always liked the P10's since I saw one modified years ago, and think it would make a awesome fishing rig. Plus still be flexible enough to use for alot of other things too. If you don't build anything in to permanent.

Which length do you have?

Re: 292 I6 to 4.3 V6 engine swap

I've had three 4.3's; 89, 90 and later Vortec in Astro vans. Both the 89 and 90 leaked coolant into the left rear cylinder, which symptoms were relieved using Bars leak. Cracked heads I think.

The 2WD 89 with throttle body injection could drive from Calgary to Vancouver on a tank of fuel. That distance is about 1000km or 600 miles. The AWD's not so good, especially the Vortec and that van was also longer. I just don't remember anymore the age of the Vortec.

I had a brother in law who got close to 500k kms (300k miles) out of one in a pick up.
