drive train??

Hi all,

I have a chance to buy a L86/6L80, low mileage for $1800. If I do it will end up in a '51 truck. Is this a good swap drive train? Are all the new stuff software deletable? It will set for quite awhile as I am not at all ready to start this project.

Thanks

drive train??

Hi all,

I posted this question yesterday in a different part of this forum, but it looks like I should have done it here, so here goes.

I have a chance to buy an L86/6L80 like new, low miles, complete for $1800. My questions are; is this a good system to swap into my 1951 5 window build? Can I assume correctly that all the un-necessary things that come with this gen system are still removable through software/hardware mods? Is there after market support for this system to be used in an old truck?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated, as I am totally out of my knowledge base

Thanks

Re: drive train??

That's an incredible price for a genV 6.2
It is more complicated than a gen3, but do-able. Someone with more knowledge will chime in eventually.
You can go look at LS1tech.com for more info; https://ls1tech.com/forums/

Re: drive train??

That would be a dream drivetrain! And for that money, don't waste a minute grabbing it up!

It will definitely be more work than a gen III, but I'm sure it's still doable. I've seen quite a few gen 5 swaps on various forums, so the precedent has been set.

Re: drive train??

Isn't that the EcoTech system, that injects fuel directly into the combustion chamber and not into the intake manifold/runner?

Gary?

Re: drive train??

.
No power steering pump either...you'll either have to have none or go aftermarket to get one retrofitted, which may bring other issues...

Re: drive train??

As I recall that combo doesn't have a power steering pump. It's electric stock.
Also that price is really too good to be true. Make sure you know the seller and check the engine vin to make sure it's not hot.
It's priced at least $3000 under typical market price.

Definitely will be a snag with this drivetrain. The simplest, but least elegant solution, is to use an electric power steering pump. I'm told that Volvo used such.

A number of aftermarket companies have jumped on this problem, and offer complete front accessory replacement kits that include a steering pump.

GM's new 6.6 gas engine appears to be based on the same LT architecture, and is using a power steering pump. Hopefully the front accessories of that 6.6 will easily swap over to the other LT engines.

Re: drive train??

I think Hot Rod magazine did a article on the LT engines and adding belt driven power steering pump.
Also check over on LS1tech I believe there is a write up in the conversions section. I scanned over it and it sounded like a good route to take.

Hey there Redraider... I'm 90% finished with my gen 5 swap if you have any questions feel free to pm me and I'll do my best. If you decide against the L86 for any reason let me know please, I'd be interested... I'm not too far away from Graham.

Re: drive train??

BRP has options for you.

Power steering is a biggie, the vacuum pump is another. I put an l83/6l80 in my dads crewcab and it was a learning experience but worked out well.
Use an Aeromotive fuel pump, pre-filter and a post filter with return.
