Thumbs up Billet Specialties fuel filter review

I’ve been searching for a good fuel filter for a long time. I liked how well the common Fram G3 from Walmart filtered, but the plastic housing made me a bit nervous. I tried a billet aluminum filter from Edelbrock, but the steel mesh screen inside it does not filter well enough. I ended up with very fine sediment in the carb and trash in my needles and seats.

Really what I needed was an aluminum housing with a paper element that was cheap to maintain. I found this filter from Billet Specialties. It’s offered in a smooth or ribbed design, and with hose barbs or AN fittings. I bought the smooth version with AN fittings. The thing that really grabbed my attention was that it takes the extremely common Quadrajet filter. Costs about $3 and is available at any auto parts store. The filter itself costs about $35 which I thought was a great price considering the looks and ease of maintenance.

Here it is in the packaging. Looks good at first sight

Out of the package, the polishing looks really nice.

Taken apart.

Now the Quadrajet filter has check valve in it to keep fuel in the carb. I tried to blow air through filter to see how free flowing it and my head would have exploded before I got air through it. By comparison, a Fram G3 is very free flowing. It’s a primitive test but it does give you some idea of how restrictive a filter will be.

I had read forum posts I found with Google about removing the check valve, so I started pulling on the rubber piece.

Pulled it all the way out and this is what I found. This looks VERY restrictive. OK for a stock motor, but my feelings are that it needs to go.

With a few quick snips, the check valve is gone and only the gasket remains which I pressed back on to the filter. Much less restrictive now.

I blew through the filter after this mod and there was much less resistance. A huge difference.

This is probably more in depth than anyone looks at a fuel filter, but after my experiences with other filters and getting trash in my carb, this one seems to meet my needs the best. I wouldn't consider removing the check valve from the filter too big of a deal, since it's very easy and will only be required when replacing the filter.

I'm not affiliated with this company, just wanted to share my thoughts on what I feel is a useful product.

Nice. This is exactly what I needed. Not see-through, but since it filters finer than the usual glass ones I don't have to keep an eye on it.

Re: Billet Specialties fuel filter

This came with the paper filter you took apart right? Did you put just the paper filter back in with the rubber end you clipped? Just wanted to be sure I am clear that you left the spring and the clipped piece out?

Thanks for the info and I appeciate your help on my questions.

Yes, the donut shaped rubber piece just gets pressed back into the filter, minus what was cut off of it. The check valve section is cut off and now it simply acts as a gasket.
