DIY Powder Coating

long 6 year story ....bought the PC kit from Eastwood 6 years ago used it for the first time last night did my engine stands ....I been bit by the bug now . Does anyone have experience with coating front end steering parts i have all moog everything to rebuild steering complete... my question is the tie rod ends etc. come loaded with grease do i bake that out bath & clean them plug and tape the threads anybody DIY this they need to be coated one way or another or they will turn to rust.... would like to know if it makes any sense to PC these parts

No real point to pc threads - I'd just keep em oiled every once in awhile. PC is nice - and that looks great. I'm always torn - it's easy to scratch, so be careful!

i can and will tape up threads and put grease on them after I coat them, just wondering if anyone has put them in oven sweated the grease out clean them up and prep

at any rate painting or powder coating them you have to remove the grease that the manufacturers installed just looking to see if anyone experienced powder coating these ?

Yes, you have to break the tie rod ends down and tape the threads. As you probably figured out, coating on threads will cause them to not fit the nut and all it will do is pop off as you tighten. I've never done my own but have been having a place do mine since the '80s, so I've gotten an education. I'm friends with the owner and he has educated me on a lot of it, from all the various pieces I have had done. People say not true, but he told me they only do individual pieces. The tie rod end has moving parts. Maybe it can be done, but when the parts move the coating will have to break and won't that start the deterioration process? Powder coat is a shell and once compromised will hold in water and the coating can become unbonded and come loose as a shell. I would tape up the ball socket and stud so the only thing coated is what is exposed. That's all that matters.

I plan on taking my large dead freezer that is 6' tall and 3' wide and pulling the plastic inner and lining it with steel and making it an oven..

"Tapping the ball joint and stud"thats the answer i was looking for thank you very much ....what do you think about sweating the grease out in the oven? my plan is to cook them get the grease out wash them good cook again tape up like you said and apply powder and cook the sleeves are another story ...to much going on there may have to paint them....maybe as a rookie I'm getting out over my skis
and should just paint it all and hone my skills on straight forward parts

any suggestions on how to hang coil springs for coating then baking

It's a a good idea to clean and heat to make sure no grease/ oil is left behind and I wipe down again after cools down.

Something here just does not sound like a good idea to me. I think I would stick to the standard paint, I used semi gloss black wheel paint on mine as it bonds great and holds up well. Stick to the easier parts Jess

I know you are right Larry I'm going to paint the steering parts . what you think about me tac welding a wire hoop to each end of the spring to hang it PC and then grind off hit those spots with a touch of POR15?

built my own oven today for the longer c-members ....only need 400 degrees for 20 mins LOL ...will see how she works tomorrow

Just hang it with a heavy gauge wire. I like to use drop ceiling suspension wires.

I'm pleased my oven works well on the right is the rear most C-member i used a Satin ...is a little to flat for me so i added some semi -gloss to the satin and coated the clamshell ( middle ) and got the desired results. The SB engine stand is semi gloss and the bracket that holds the A-arm cross shaft was done professionally and the finish i am looking for so I mixed my own and nailed it ...............
