column to rag joint

I need some help getting from my column 1"DDX3/4 to the rag joint extension 1"x3/4. What do I need at the column to the 3/4 DD for vibration or movement, there was a greased socket with a rubber boot, which I assumed was for any movement

Re: column to rag joint

Here’s what I’m talking about. The end of the column is 1’ OD with a 3/4 ID. Can I put a coupler there or should I put some kind of joint for movement? Thanks

Re: column to rag joint

It's hard to see in your pic what type/size you got coming off the rag joint.

The rag joint will take care of the vibration issue. If it is DD and the rag joint deflection is not excessive I would weld a like extension on it and continue with more DD shaft to the column 1"DD and install a 1"DD X 1"DD or 1"DD X 3/4"DD (depending on your application) universal at that point.

If you require a bottom u joint at the rag joint (excessive deflection) DD shaft, you'll have to a Heim Joint somewhere in the middle to keep the whole shebang from flopping around.

Re: column to rag joint

They both accept 3/4 DD. I figure the rag joint would take care of vibration, but there was a greased joint where the old DD and column came together. And it was splined.

Like this? ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
You no longer are using that I'm assuming since it hooks up to a factory 3/4-36 spline on the end of the factory column.

You measure DD shaft across the wide radiused ends, most after market columns are 1"DD.

Re: column to rag joint

That's it! The new column accepts a 3/4 DD. I was going to put a new shaft from the rag joint extension to the new column and insert a set screw at the column, but wasn't sure if I needed a u joint there seems the original had what you pictured. Thanks for the help

If I think what you are saying is you are going to insert 3/4"DD into your 1" DD column and add a set screw?

That's not the way to do it. You will need a 3/4 x 1 universal for misalignment …..trust me.

That's exactly what I wanted to know, thanks. I could make it work without the universal, but that doesn't always mean its ok. Thanks again for your help.
