Re: single vs double wall top

I would imagine the only time my top will come off is when I pull it later this year to assess any damage that may be under it. THere does not appear to be but I want to check and be sure.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas holiday

Probably
I have an overhead crane as well as a 2 post car lift. Both could be used to remove my top, (probably by myself) I just don't care to do it

Red72, how do you do it by yourself? My double wall is very heavy and I am trying to figure out a way to rig up a top puller?

Re: single vs double wall top

I have a low shed with a flat roof about 12" higher than the base of my top. I just back up to the shed, unbolt the top, get in the middle inside, and lift up. Then I slide it on some 2X4s laid crossways on the shed roof. It's not too bad if you use your legs to lift.

Re: single vs double wall top

I'm planning on getting a couple of 2x4's to run across the width of the top with enough room on the outside to put in circle eye bolts into it facing the ceiling. Then using 4 ratchet straps (one on each corner) to lift it off and tuck it up into the roof of my garage. I've seen this done a few times, but I have a question for anyone out there that might know.

The roof of my garage is covered by sheet rock...would some lag circle eye bolts be sufficient to hold the weight of the top if put in straight up?

I'm sure a better way would be to cut a hole in the sheet rock for the straps to go through and put the bolts in through the side of the beams, but I rent and would rather not do that unless is absolutely necessary. I'm not in construction so I don't know what type of capacity these things can handle...

Re: single vs double wall top

just screw the eye bolts into a stud. That'll hold a top for sure.

Re: single vs double wall top

In the back ground is what I used to store my double wall, poles were wide enough to back into with the front 4x4 removed, then I would get into the bed and use my back against the top and lift enough to walk back and set rear end of top onto back 4x4 then set front 4x4 on bed rails and slide onto bolts in poles, kinda looked like a monkey screwing a elephant but it worked http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...0&d=1312287356

unbolt it. remove rear seat and tail gate. brace back against underside of top. lift with legs. get to end of bed. slip down to ground. military press top and walk to waiting tall saw horses.

Re: single vs double wall top

im going against the grain on the weight theory .i traded a man in NC today my double wall for his single wall top.and we had both agreed right away that the single wall was quite a bit more heavy.we couldnt beleave the difference.we had the hatch removed on both for the move as well.as i compared it with my other double wall when i got home it seems the fiberglass is much more thick where the hatch arms and hatch lock bolts are.has anybody else noticed this? or do i need get some rest after that long drive.

Re: single vs double wall top

If you four by your blazer or Plan to I've seen single wall tops break when the truck Is Flexed Out. My double ive had no problems Except the cage bolts have broken off inside the top a couple on each side that I Need to fix at some Point. I also had my top off using the eye bolts And four ratchet straps to lift it. 2x4 slides Under top and lift slowly moving from one corner to the next to lift it Slowly a couple inches Off the body. Make sure the upper eyelet bolts are into
A stud up top and you will Be fine. The top weights around 350 pounds or So but I've gotten it Off with three strong guys working together. Not Ideal but it worked.

Re: single vs double wall top

Weight on the single wall vs double wall .. Their both heavy and hard to deal with yes the single is easy to bolt down with out the stripping that can happen to the double wall . Still take some effect to put them on and off.
