Does anyone run these heads or know anything about them ?

Chev 350 made in Mexico casting # 83417368.
Intake measures 1.94".
Do they flow as well as 882 heads, and are they prone to cracking ?
Thanks !!

Never seen a casting number that starts with an 8.
Is it on the head or block?

Re: Does anyone run these heads or know anything about them ?

I have seen heads with what I believe the exact same end casting.

My thought is that you have the basic 350 Goodrich heads which came on the the cheapest made brand new 350 you could buy. Which was made in Mexico for a long long time. I got one in a pinch when i did not have time to build a engine.

Which is if they are like the heads I saw are roughly 76cc chamber, and 160cc port heads. Which puts them right with 882 heads.

Re: Does anyone run these heads or know anything about them ?

I'm not familiar with that number...But am with other big valve heads, the oldies...441, 487, 041, 882
Every big valve head flows better than the 882's, unless there is a head like a 882 with a different number, that I don't know about...
Pictures of the combustion chamber and inside the exhaust port would help identify the head as a good, or not. No idea about crack prone...

if you google that number, you get a bunch of results.

Looks like they are Goodwrench heads

Re: Does anyone run these heads or know anything about them ?

I have been running 882's on my 383 stroker for 20 years and have zero complaints about them.
Ran Mexican 292 sixes many years ago, and was happy how they ran, and the goodwrench 350 in my other truck runs very well, so I can't complain about Mexican engines based on my experience.
I just have not run across this casting number before, and was curious so I can justify going through the heads so they can be installed on a 350 that is in the works here.
Thanks for the replies and info, guys !!!

Do they flow as well as 882's? Considering they are some of the worst flowing factory castings, you'd be hard pressed to find something that does not.

Re: Does anyone run these heads or know anything about them ?

To my knowledge most stock castings are stock, stock as in came from the factory meant to perform like a factory engine.

This is not a bad thing, they are designed to operate in the lower rpm range creating velocity in the lower rpm range. They do perform if you want your torque.

Everybody wants HP, why?, we drive trucks, not Camaros. So many toss these to the scrapper to let China make something of it.

This I do know, when you scrap metal on the West Coast, you get low dollar for it and Chinese crap in return, your exporting wealth. There is no Remelt facilities out here.

So look at the bigger picture, make something work, like the factory did. Or just go out and buy some AFR style heads and build some serious power.

Either way you will not get any MPG. I do not make a car payment, just a fuel payment now to American gas companies due to the Baaken and Tar Sands Oil fields opened up!

Its the American Way

Because that's what magazines and commercials talk about. Ignore the fact that when they are talking about their new 400HP truck, that 400 HP is at 6000 RPM, and you will only actually rev the engine there 0.0001% of the lifetime of the vehicle. Meanwhile, you sacrificed power and torque in the area the engine will spend 98% of it's life to get that bigger number.

You learn this really quick going back and forth between a vehicle that has a idle-3500 powerband vs a 2000-5500 powerband.

Re: Does anyone run these heads or know anything about them ?

I tell it like this: I've never felt a lack of torque. So if a stock 305 can give me enough torque, a built 350 with better top should give me enough torque too. And its worked out that way every time. We aren't talking top end biased powerbands, but the stock powerband is severely restricted.

As for OEM heads and torque, yes they have small ports for higher velocity, but so do aftermarkets and vortecs with significantly higher flow rates, giving you both low end torque and higher end HP. There is nothing good about oem heads besides vortecs, plain and simple.

Re: Does anyone run these heads or know anything about them ?

Removed the valve springs and valves, and discovered the guides have been knurled during the "rebuild", so obviously the life expectancy of those heads is limited.
Gonna scrap them and clean up my spare set of 882's.

The only heads "prone" to cracking are the ones you overheat!
