The 700r4 will bolt up to the 292 engine. You will need to remove or modify the crossmember under the bell housing. Do a search to get all the info on this swap. It is about the same as a v-8 engine.

The crossmember is already gone.
So I won’t need an adapter or different flywheel or? Posted via Mobile Device |

You will need a flex plate for the back of the engine, a rear trans mount, a cooler and lines, a shifter to fit it. Do a calculation based on your rear gear and tire size and install the correct drive and driven gear in the trans. Now for the biggie, the TV cable. There is no kit to put one on the stock 6. This cable setup needs to be engineered to almost perfection to get the pressures correct at idle and wide open. You can do some reading on setting them and measuring the pressures to see if you have it right. I use the bowtie made easy setup on my 66 with the V8 and the holley carb. I set it up using a pressure gauge per the instructions and it is a great trans. If it is not right it will kill at trans in a hurry.

Thanks wrenchbender & Jimmy! You confirmed most of my information. I would probably have to change the intake to have a holly 500cfm carb and possibly the exhaust manifold too.

For the flexplate, you have to have the exact one to fit a 292 and have the correct hole pattern for the 700R4 torque converter. There was a thread here about it previously. IIRC the flexplate was for a '67-'72 C30 with the 292 and a TH400. I agree that the TV cable will be your biggest hurdle.

You can drill the mounting holes in a v-8 flexplate to 1/2 in & use it providing the holes line up that mounts to the converter like the Captain says.

I just installed a 200-4R behind the 292 in my truck. The 700-R4 is a nice trans, but the 200-4R will do what ever you want and is so much easier to install. You can use the original trans mount, just move it back. I used the same driveshaft, depending on the length of your 4 speed. I also figured a way to hook up the TV cable for the overdrive. I'm now thinking of installing Langston headers and possibly a holly 2 or 4 barrel carb, so may have to change that also. |

Do you have any pics? I know there a lot of people that would like to see how you connected the TV cable to the 1bbl carb. Do you have the correct line pressures in all gears?

Re: 292 to 700r4, what’s needed?
I know the TV needs to be damned near perfect, but what if he went with a constant pressure valve body?
Would that make adjustments less vital so the transition doesn't burn up as easily. |
