Oil Priming my 327. I Hear a gear noise

I primed my fresh 327 today. Dropped the distributor in and turned it by hand. Has good pressure. I can hear the gears from the pump with the distributor or if I use just a screw driver. It's a melling 10552 pump and melling shaft. Oil got to the lifters nicely as it should and that all looks good. Take a listen to this video and have a listen and let me know if this is normal please. The engine was already primed when this video was taken. Watch "Distributor noise 327" on YouTube

I am surprised you have that much oil pressure turning it that slow. Also how are you able to turn your distributor. It should be engaged with the cam gear.

Re: Oil Priming my 327. I Hear a gear noise

I kind of thought that too. I have an end on the bottom of the distributor that has no gears on it so it only contacts the oil pump shaft. It's just for priming.

I put another new melling high volume oil pump in a bucket of oil and turned it as well and it makes the same noise so can this really be the way they are? Watch "Melling oil pump" on YouTube

I'm stumped, I don't recall oil pumps making noise like that.

I'm not much help other than to say that I feel your pain. About a month ago, I was helping a friend prime his rebuilt 350 before startup (and luckily still on the engine stand) and it made exactly the same noise. We got a brand new melling pump and same noise. The third new pump that we tried was quiet. I read all kinds of stuff about the noise online with all sorts of opinions. From the folks who called melling, responses ranged from "It's OK" to "Turn it backwards. If it's quiet, then it's OK". But that makes zero sense to me. I wasn't about to run a pump that was that loud.

Does it make that much noise with a drill attached to it to spin? Don't think I would be running it

Re: Oil Priming my 327. I Hear a gear noise

My drill is loud but I can hear it a bit. My engine builder told me he has run melling pumps with noise like this before and not had problems other than you can sometimes hear it. Funny thing is I have 2 brand new melling pumps that make the same noise. If I knew I didn't have to buy 5 more to get a quiet one I would but who knows.

Re: Oil Priming my 327. I Hear a gear noise

I bought a new pump today. A melling with what they call "sharks teeth". It's supposed to run smoother. I'll update here when I get it installed.

Re: Oil Priming my 327. I Hear a gear noise

I have heard of the new pumps with the re-designed teeth. They are supposed to be better is some aspect.

I have not heard of the gear noise issue, I would call Melling.

I just put a new Melling in and it has the same gear noise.
Been running it and it is getting better.

Re: Oil Priming my 327. I Hear a gear noise

My new shark teeth style pump is here tomorrow. I want to see if it's as noisy as these straight cut gear ones are. If they are ill just leave the pump alone.

Re: Oil Priming my 327. I Hear a gear noise

Got my shark tooth pump today. Same pump number I had before but it's the st type. I just set it in a can of fresh oil and spun it. Wow. Way quieter than the other. Looks like I'll be changing pumps tomorrow.

Re: Oil Priming my 327. I Hear a gear noise

All the Melling pumps I have installed in last 12 months needed to be clearanced internally....

There are a couple of areas internally that need to be ever so slightly touched up with a small die grinder....they then run quietly....

Shark tooth style dont need the same attention....so may be the best way to go in the future.
