Educate me on Dana 70\14 bolt rear ends

So I picked up a '52 International L-130 dually flatbed that needs some work to be back on the road. The data tag actually shows the truck to be a L-132 with a 8600 lb GVW. It has a non-running 220 six with a 4 speed, don't know the rear gear ratio but it is a 5.xx or maybe even a 6.xx. It's probably a 45-50 mph truck. I live on a US Highway and want to update it to make it more highway worthy. I have a 283 from my '62 C30 dually that I'd like to use. Would have to find a transmission such as the sm420 or sm465 and a later rear end with maybe 4.10 gears. The current rear has an approximate width of 53" so my question is what rear end would be my better choice? I want to keep it as a dually and it will be used for general hauling.

Look up the 14 bolt bible on pirate4x4. Tons of info on there. I would go with a 14 bolt or an AAM 10.5 rear. 14 bolt will have the 8 on 6.5 lug pattern more than likely. Look for an open rear and add a detroit to the factory open carrier. That is a much better setup than the factory govlock. Dana's are good axles but I would stay with the 14 bolt.

53 in..??....where are you measuring? Is that the spring pad width?
A cab and chassis 14b will be the narrowest..at 63-1/2" width wms2wms

Measuring from backing plate to backing plate. I'll get a better measurement in the daylight.

I'll head over to pirate4x4 and check it out. Thanks

Ok..measured my C30 C&C axle..backing plate to backing plate...44-1/2"...so a dually axle may be what you need to look for

Greg, that link for pirate will get him pretty much all he wants to know as it is full of tech.

If you need any Info about the SRW 3500 axle just ask. I have one sitting in the yard from a 99. Even has 3.5" brake drums. I know the 13" SRW drums won't clear a 16" dual rim without spacers. I tried. Maybe 17s would do it. Looks like the outermost bead on the drum is the hang up.
