Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

Thanks, guys. Yah, the whole decision really bogged things down last summer as the whole thing ground to a hault temporarily.

Glad you enjoyed the boo, George.

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

Oh, sorry. I didn't include the picture of the finished product.

Here it is.!

I had planned on working on the sketchy studs for mounting the rear shocks to the frame tonight, but ended up squeezing Blue Bell into the other stall for some much needed maintenance prior to our annual fishing weekend with my dad, brother, and two nephews. Worked on the crappy Harbor Freight boat trailer a bit the other day , as well.

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

I'll definitely be posting up some pics when I actually get something done.

It's not of Mustard, but here's a shot of Blue Bell with the boat trailer in tow at the family fishing weekend. The boat and tent are both older than Mustard (boat is from 1953). That's my Dad's vintage posterior in the pic, too.

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

Between getting the veggie garden in and more work on the house, I did manage to get some work bench cleared off enough to get my benchtop blast cabinet set on it. Replaced the dry rotted old gloves on it and started blasting the rear axle mounting parts. Need more media, as the suction tube keeps creating enough of a crater around itself to require tipping the cabinet up periodically to get the suction tube back in the media. Seems like there should have been a better design. I'm trying not to get sidetracked by revamping the bottom of the blast cabinet

That cabinet will come in handy. I wish I had bought one when I was sand blasting all my parts. It would have saved a lot of sand and work, by dragging
the sand blaster in and out all the time.

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

It works OK. I haven't used it too much yet, though. Too many other projects. As I alluded to above, it tends to suck in a crater above the blaster suction and then starve itself of media, but other than that it's working well. In the past I've hooked up the shop vac to the filtered exhaust port, which I should probably do again before using it too much.

Stopped at a junkyard on my way home from a routine doctor visit an hour away or so in Stanley, WI. He had 4 67-72 trucks in the yard. Not bad for a yard around here, but he's sort of a fan of that era, too, as he had one he was rebuilding in his shop. Gotta love junkyards! Might be taking a rear bumper and tailgate off his hands. We'll see. I've already got two tailgates. The yard one isn't perfect, but it's probably better than either of mine. I've got to refresh my memory and take a peak at mine again and figure out if it's worth getting a different one. Mine are both out in the shed...

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

Replaced the rear shock to frame mounting studs today. The ones that were on there were welded on. I cut them off, and realized the original bolt head was still in the hole. Pounded that out, put new 1/2" grade 8 bolts in, and welded the new bolts to the frame. Not sure if that last step was really necessary, but it beefed up the right side one, which had a pretty chewed up hole after getting the old bolt head out. Plus, now I'll be able to torque the nuts on with only one wrench rather than getting a wrench in on the back side of the mount and on the bolt head.

Blasted some more on the rear axle mounting parts and the frame mounted bump stops, but didn't take any pictures. Still a bit slow going due to the media level being too low and the suction tube, but the compressor keeps up much better than the old oil-less 20 gallon job.

Good to get some stuff done, but the kitchen is going to be taking up most of the time for a while now. I'll try to get some stuff in on Mustard here and there, though, and will keep you all posted when it happens. Some of it will likely even be more exciting than shock mounting bolts!!!

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

Nice work on the shock mounts!

And kitchens are a must have, About 3 years ago i gave in and had a kitchen remodel done, didn't do all the work myself, i hired a contractor and had it done, I did the demolition and helped off and on which they probably didn't like I thought I'd show you a couple pic's for inspiration, hope you don't mind.

I forgot to take pic's of what it looked like before, but snapped a few pic's of the gutted kitchen then of course after the remodel was done. The stove was that old 70's green and built into the dark brown stained plywood cabinets, the stove was narrow so no industry standard stove could be put in its place, it had butcher block laminate counter tops, pretty nasty looking stuff.

You may notice there was a kitchen fire at some point on the stove by the black soot on the wall... we also knocked the wall out next to the fridge and moved it out a couple feet to line up with the wall in the living room to make room for a normal stove and gained an extra counter top in the process, had to pull sheet rock and straighten 2 walls in the kitchen before any cabinets were installed, The cabinets on the left in the 3rd picture were not there before, I probably went a little overboard, added lots of electrical, under cabinet lighting ect, but we love the kitchen now.

Scott, as much as I wish that were my kitchen, it's actually Swamp Rats. Looks really nice, Rat. Putting a down payment on some cherry cabinets this week, so things will start rolling on it pretty heavy, now, and I'll go back to watching everyone else make progress on their trucks.

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

Sold the old rear axle (Eaton H052) for $120 the other day using craigslist. Fella that came to pick it up is going to weld the spider gears and put it into a pulling truck. He picked it up with mini van without an operating tailgate. We had to load it in the sliding door on the side, which was a little interesting. Hope he had help lined up when he got home...
