Re: Custom bumpers

Went back again and searched. Found bigbadchev72's thread on his rear bumper. Really like the looks of that one. I just need some ideas on how to add a spare tire carrier like Burt4x4's to the design.

Re: Custom bumpers

Well every picture tells a story and I ain't got no picturs anymore..My clubs website seams to have died so until it's back up or I re-upload I ain't got no stories to tell hahahaha

What I did was pretty simple stuff with rookie welding too. Luckly I have a powerful stick welder that can burn thru anything. I made a /\ frame out of 2"x2" square tubing .120 wall I think and bought a peice of 1/2" plate laser cut in a circle for the wheel to bolt to. welded that to the top of the A frame. the A frame is welded to that trailer spindal and that is welded to the 3"x8" main bumper. Done. Some guys make the A frame smaller and mount it to one side or the other. mounted lower for more review mirror visablity OR mounted higher for better apporch angle clearance when your grill is pointing skyward on your favorite trail. Yup I mounted mine high for better trail clearance. Now my rearview mirror is mostly tire, I can see around it a bit..no worries the goal it to go forward not back right! haahaha

Re: Custom bumpers

Thank's Burt. I get the idea, just wish you had some pic's. I can't even get the first couple you posted earlier on this thread to work now. That design looks like the way to go. Thanks, Bryan.

Re: Custom bumpers

I gave up on my club's site comming back to life so I am trying to find pics on my home pc..I haven't found the build pic when I was welding this up but here is a finnished product shot. That is a 35" SSR mounted to that gate. You can see the spindal on the right and thoes D-ring/shakle mounts are 6" long just the base is buried into the bumper welded everywere posiable.

Dream up exactly what you want.Don`t you have any welding shops or truck body places in the Yellow Pages? Some of the nicest bumpers were built on b&m (that`s beer & materials) for alot less than a catalog bumper.

Re: Custom bumpers

No problem Burt. I go to the store for 4 items and forget three! But honey, I got the beer! Still researching the rear bumper build, but pretty much have a design in mind. Really like yours with a few mods., for my setup.

Re: Custom bumpers

hahah NEVER forget the Beer!!

There is no spare mounted right now cuz I need to get two new studs into my mount. The last of my 1Ton Project changes from 6lug to 8.
The gate is secured to the bumper with the eye bolt you see. I welded a big nut on the inside of the bumper. On the gate's bottom you can see I added a foot/pad for the gate to rest on the bumper. I like the eyebolt as I know it is secure and tight. Some of the latches I have seen just didn't seem to be strong. I did NOT want this gate jumping around on me.
Anyway Hope this helps with your project!
Burt
