Re: Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?

I haven't been able to find the correct nuts for the bolt or the mounting screws.

Re: Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?

Wow Cericd, those photos are amazing.. bet there aren't too many of those OEM in-bed spare tire mounting bolts floating around at the dealers around the whole USA - especially with the GM part number sticker still on them.. very helpful though.. I might be able to find an equivalent at Fastenal now that I've seen that - for ten times the price..

Just a statement in general and on a related topic regarding these spare carriers - I do think there are two improvements needed: 1.) Locking feature - because even stock steelies are hard to find these days and if you have a brand new $125 balanced tire on your recently powdercoated spare steel wheel you don't wanna just go off and leave it sitting there in the bed tempting people.

2.) A quick release - to pop that spare off and on for cleaning or for loading large items in the bed.

Re: Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?

I was thinking about using some sort of locking lug nut when I install mine.

Re: Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?

That's similar the one in the illustration. And bonus too, you helped locate another bolt for 67-72. That is, it's the right bolt for a carrier type for 67-72. This is the 399714. I found the part days ago, but the number doesn't come up on wiki for 71-72 on search, so wasn't able to confirm. Does anyone know if this nut and bolt is for the carrier on topic, and if so, how does it work?

I think the tire is not in perportion to what is normal. I have a 15r235 tire on a factory rim and ther is no way the mount could support if up off the floor in fact it sits on the floor and still rises a good 4 inches above the side of the bed.

I guesse I;m wrong about whether its monted inward or outward as shown in the fam. Mine has been mounted that way from new, Ditto for several others I have seen.

Re: Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?

Good, Glad to see my hardware chart clip made it here as it supports what I said about the carriage bolt. Being a pretty typical hardware store staple it should be easy to find one.

There are a number of questions running through the thread so I am just going to hit what I can without a lot of quotes.

The spare rests on the floor, the illustration could be clearer in that regard. But the floor in fact is the primary load bearer. The simple fact the tire retention bolt slides freely in the slot should make that plain.

The carrier mounts as shown in the drawing. Tucking under the upper lip, the lower end swoops outboard (away from the centerline) to pickup the fastener line along the edge of the bed floor.

Since the wheel is retained with a lug nut, the provided wrench is all you need to tighten or loosen the wheel for installation or removal. The second back up nut... see post #71.

If you want to lock it, you have two period options. A keyed spare tire lock with a special nut you tightened then a cover f keylocked to, to prevent theft. They were once common as dirt but I am sure years of neglect and lost keys have seriously reduced their number.
The other of course is a chain (or cable) through the center hole around the carrier and one half of the wheel tire assembly. You could even do a full turn around the carrier if you wish.

Since peple seem really hung up on hardware just use what you can and keep looking. Like I said above a hardware store carriage bolt and a lug nut will get you started.

If you look above on the parts clip, that part number is used on the Suburban which used an inside mounted spare. It was also apparently used on Blazers. They had several different mounts including screwing it flat to the floor! As far as I know that wing nut/bolt has no place on a fleetside P13 carrier.

Thanks for the additional info Tim. I should have known I saved that pic from one of your posts. You're always quick to respond with great info on the specifics of these trucks.

Not to hijack, but does anyone have pics of their truck with the spare tire mounted in the bed using one of these?

I would add a thick washer between the back up nut and the wheel to reduce point bending loads on the wheel. No point in messing up a wheel.

Re: Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?

If I understand you right, Suburban had a service 10? Didn't know that, I thought that was marked for a c-10, course it doesn't say fleetside etc like the 1023, which doesn't show for 1971, but it's likely correct anyway. Fun!

Here's the 1022, which shows for 69-72 service 10-30. Couldn't tell you what it's for, but I bet it works. Manual says cut to fit.: http://shop.docrebuild.com/1955-1991...GM3991022.aspx

Edit, I found this illustration for a 1022. http://www.discontinuedspares.com/in...ucts_id=435385

Re: Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?

I'd be interested to see pics of the wheel in the bed on our trucks too. I moved to an under the bed gas tank so I carry no spare right now. Would be nice to have one just in case but not sure about the look.

Here is a spare tire mount thread for the 58-59 fleetsides on this site:

Re: Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?

OH I like the sunken deal there. Is that just an upside down wheel tub? My small spare does come up a bit past the bedside. Not real pretty but stuck on the side of the road is uglier.
When I got in an accident and my spare tire was just loose in the back of the Blazer it took out my passenger seat. Luckily no one was sitting there or they would have been hurt. All the crup in the back of the truck was strewn across the highway as I spun to a stop. I no longer carry anything but that spare in the bed of my pickup unless it is strapped down good and have a bed toolbox for my jack and such.
The tire rests on the bed and wheel tub. Not sure it would hold up in an accident.
But it does keep the tire out of the way.

Re: Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?

We pretty well beat this to death and thanks to all for the information. Especially the walking GM encyclopedia in SS. Still curious if the top and bottom screws differ, and if anyone believes this is an original bolt for the carrier. It may be for carrier under the bed. It's definitely a 67-72 serv 10-30 part.

Re: Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?

that origonal bolt... a carrige bolt... is what Gm called for. I got almost exactly the same bolt from ACE. same threads as a lug nut for a half ton. interesting that it calls for two of them. maybe three or even six for my 72c10. with my luck. interetsting

Re: Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?

Mine has carriage head bolts in the floor, same size and length as the rest of the floor bolts.I don't have the bolt to hang the spare though.
Strange,it also has the under bed spare hanger.

Re: Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?

Makes sense they'd reuse the bed bolts for the bottom. That carrier looks awfully close to the wheel housing, but if I recall, mine was the same and likely factory. Apparently the tire rests a tad against the wheel housing?

Holy crap 100% Chevy - those photos are end of story as far as the in-bed spare topic.

In my own mind I am a better man for having seen those pictures, no joke.

Thanks for posting and will be interested to see if anyone can top your post with that original SPID and photo of the factory installation.

I had a funny (to me anyway) thought - where someone installs four (4) spare carriers in each of the four corners of their bed; and puts a fifth one under the bed... rolling with five spares - take that triple A!
