Re: 2 quick questions about rust

Yes, that is it. So epoxy primer is different from regular primer?

Re: 2 quick questions about rust

I went back and looked at your previous statement yes you can put the epoxy primer over what’s left of the old primer. A DA would probably be a little faster but they also use a lot of air don’t know how big your compressor is. Another idea you may try, if you have a heat gun heat the paint to soften it up and then use a razor blade scraper you can takeoff a lot of paint in a short period of time won’t work everywhere but great for big flat areas, then come back over it with your sander.

Is this something you did yourself? I'm seeing on some places you use a power washer

Re: 2 quick questions about rust

Having gone full in, I would get a DA. Get all that old primer off the vehicle. You will know for sure you have a bond with all areas.

Body work is about tools. Big air compressors for time effective production. I am no body or paint guy yet I have figured this out.

When good enough is not perfect, and perfect is not good enough will be the question. Check out the forums on Southern Polyurethanes those guys will give you good direction. Remember above all, the Owner, Barry would be the guy to listen too above everyone else. You will find tricks along the way.

As far as rust goes, if its there, sand and wire wheel it out. Going over it multiple times is the key. The least amount of it that cannot be gotten rid of is the best. Those tiny cracks and crevices are for the blaster. What ever media you use.

Yes. Take a look at this repair both before and after. I am not sure where you get I am using a power washer??? I did blast, then sand, wire wheel more than 5 times over and over again.

As close as you can get to clean metal. On a side note Ospho was used, Only as Barry prescribed.

I actually did not have a pic in between the 3rd and 4th pic. I had gone over approximately two more times to remove more of that rust and got it even cleaner before the coat of epoxy. This should explain the process a bit more in detail for you.

Re: 2 quick questions about rust

Wow, toolboxchev, thanks so much. A picture(s) is indeed worth a 1000 words! How you did yours is what I'm going to be aiming for. I talked to a company today that does some sort of "bead" blasting and he wants my truck to be taken apart and delivered to him that way he can do each piece individually and then have better control over it warping. I'm thinking I can take of the hood, 2 door, 2 front fenders and the tailgate. He charges $100 per hour. This way, I would have a lot of my time freed up.
I have no idea what I meant when I said your power washed your truck??

That would be the dustless blasting setup.

Re: 2 quick questions about rust

Is this the one you're talking about? Do you think it will work and what would be the chances of warping the metal?

Re: 2 quick questions about rust

I just found that tonight and thought I would get your input on it. But I need to call the guy back about doing the blasting and find out more about what/how he does his. When I talked to him the other day on the phone, he sounded really rushed so I was hesitant in carrying out a long conversation.
