Rust coatings

I have never used any of them and never will. It has already been said, the only way to do it right is to remove any and all traces of rust. For me these paints are just a temporary fix that will itself be harder to remove than the rust later down the road when it comes back.

Good point on the naval jelly Mike, I have been blasting or having parts dipped and EDP coated so long I had forgotten that one completely.

I used POR-15 about a month ago. Although it was alot of work to prep the surface just to lay the stuff down, I am very pleased with the results but like what was said above, I'll know how good (or bad) this stuff is in 10-15 years. For now, it looks good, is rock hard, and tough as nails.

anybody got any ideas on how to remove light surface rust from in between the inner & outer panels of a fleetside box. The panels are off the base, looking for alternatives other than splitting the panels

While I tend to agree that most of this stuff , other than the phosphoric acid based stuff, is a band aid at best when you are talking about anything sheet metal related but when it comes to frames and other heavy sections I don't know if I can agree. It's pretty common in industrial and other heavy equipment to remove scale and treat or coat. I have personally tried as an experiment some good epoxy paint on a rusty snowmobile trailer and 15 years later it's still solid as a rock. I'd say that in heavy metal sections like our trucks frames that are usually already rusty and have been for 30 years that as long as the frame is sound that scale removal and overcoating with something like epoxy is an acceptable process. Sheet metal has very little to give in terms of thickness and can be compromised quite easily by rust. Heavy sections seem to fare much better. I would also argue that regardless of what you do if the new coating is compromised the corrosion process will just start again whether it's been blasted clean or not. The only exception is if a galvanic type coating is applied and this must be applied to a white or near white blasted surface.

I just bought a blazer that has no rust but I plan on going topless in Florida and figured I could protect the interior with one of these products. I haven't even used any of them yet and I feel defensive. It's not like I'm painting over rust and just hiding it from view, I was hoping to help prevent it from starting.

i know what you mean. I was going to sandblast my frame, then use one of these products but feel like I would be a bad person if I did.

Has anyone ever painted their entire interior with this stuff? Could I brush it on and have it look decent? I'm taking floor, inside tailgate, kick panels, etc? Anyone ever done this? I want to take the top off and it rain pretty often here, plus the interior looks like crap now.
What do you think? I'm prepared to get yelled at.

Im about to take my frame down to get blasted and asked the guy about por-15...
His opinion: it's crap. too expensive, doesn't do what it claims... much better products on the market.
Unfortuneately I didn't have time to go into details with him on the phone the other day, but certainly plan to when I see him soon...

Just thought I'd pass along his comment. he's been blasting cars for many years...

I have used Zerorust on my Burb frame after I pressure washed, wire brushed on a grinder and used Zerorust prep. It seems to working very well. It's only been about a year ago but We pull a trailer for Motocross and are on a lot of gravel and dirt and it still looks brand new. Dave

This stuff is awesome..I just painted my chassis with this and it is Nice and seems to be very durable... $110 for a gallon kit that will go a LONGGGGGG way...

Yes this is an old thread.Why start a new one if this one already exist?I think it's also important because most of what these rust coating threads lack is time.You can throw some rattle can dollar store paint over rust and will look fine at first then flake off after a week.

If its been blasted and there is no rust, why would you use a ruct encapsion paint? Paint Over Rust..
