I for one think that JYD might be on to something. There may be 19,500 registered users but I bet no more than 5% have contributed. Thats only $24,375.00. How much is needed to keep this site up and running(with a prudent reserve)

You gotta be jokin.. Less than 1% !!! Everyone is at different places financially, and I've been where I couldn't afford $25. But <1%. That's FBS.
Did anyone like my idea about fees? :
$0 to look
$10 to post,buy only
$25 to post, sell, have PMs
That way those who TRULY can't afford to contribute would still have access to free info. The membership would almost certainly go down, but if currently <1% contribute, the additional fees generated should more than pay for the site.
Al
*edit* I have ebay expirience and would be willing to donate time in the listing, selling, shipping of items.
And I'd like to buy some cookies Liz !LOL

I would be very surprised if the active members are even close to that 19,500. I bet that half the registered names are inactive so I wouldn't be using those numbers to figure out the potential money that could be raised.

Putting the members in order least post to most there are like 6,622 with zero posts.

Well there are 19,000+ registered members but from what I have seen many of those on the list have never posted or only posted very few times in the past several years. Maybe when there is time some of those excess names that have not posted in the last two or three years are dropped off the rolls. There are an aweful lot of members that have not posted at all in the past 3-4+ years and more than likely never will. It would give a more clear picture of actually how many members there are here. The only thing about a mandatory fee is I think it may put a crimp on new people wanting to come aboard and keep the board from growing as much as it possible could.

believe it or not there are several hundred "active members" with below ten posts. There are members who lurk daily that have not posted in a year or more (ya'll scare em? ) I know there are ALOT of mia members and non active accounts but there are alot of active people who seem to not be.

I think its really cool of all ya'll to shout out ideas on how to help support the site. I know he is open to all suggestions. Just remember he did not even want to charge for the parts areas.. there were several factors leading to that. I would be seriously taken back if the site ever turned into a pay site.. don't see that happening. This place is not about making money to him, its about sharing knowledge and continuing to support the hobby. The fact that the site was losing this with the nit picking and arguing bad posts etc had alot more to do with this thread even being then money itself. There have been many times Josh has paid the server etc out of pocket, if it was about money it would had closed then.

I know I'm just rambling away but its in ref to a few different posts. Ya'll rock and friends, trucks and knowledge is what its all about. Think of all the younger members we have ( I mean 12, 13 yrs old etc) Its awesome that they can come here and learn from those who have owned and worked on these trucks for years and years.. a safe place for them to be, without being bashed for asking a question..

ok I have nothing more to add at this time so carry on with your chattering.

and guys.. thank you all for all your support within these threads.. after being yelled at in PM email etc lately, ya'll made a few of us realize again how much this site and its members rock.

Personally I don't care how much it would cost, I would pay it and would still be greatful for the wealth of knowledge, comraderey, and all the fun and entertainment that I get from this board. If you break it down to the bare $$$, you spend more money on snacks in the car and pops or water at the store in one month then what the subscription to this AWESOME site costs.
To me this is the next best thing to sliced bread and it would be like losing my left arm if it were to go away . I am up for any and all fundraising ideas and REALLY appreciated the behind the scenes effort that Josh and the staff put into the irreplacable virtuial librarary and tutorial for the non mechanically inclined, my self included in that group I just wanted to say that what ever changes finacially or not I am with you Josh on and know that you always have the sites best interest at heart. Thank you again for all you do, and not forget liz, rod, tx firfighter, and I know i'm forgeting some others, but thanks to all just the same Randy

Josh, make it pay you well for your time or shut it down. When poeple say it's not about the money, it almost always is. It is human nature to want to be rewarded for one's efforts. Figure out what your time is worth to you, set a subsciption rate based on that and see what happens. Thanks, Lyman.

Thanks for the support all, I really appreciate it. As Liz said, this site was never about the money, it's my way to give back to the automotive community... All I ask in return is enough $$$ to run this place without putiin undue stress on myself financially... Any little extra I just spend on my truck... Sorry for the slow reply to all y'all, and those that I haven't re'd to, I'm not ignoring just taking awhile to get to everyone... I've read all the PMs and emails, and this thread for all the suggestions etc. and I am throwing them all around in my head. If we could get even 1000 members to subscribe we would have one helluva server to handle everything

This is just the last 3 months in a snapshot, I do
realize alot of these peeps are never on here, but

Sept 05, 13 pages of newbies, ZERO subscriptions

August 05, 18 pages of newbies, 2 subscriptions

July 05, 19 pages of newbies, 3 subscriptions

*There is an average of 30 per page x 50 pages &
that alone is 1500 peeps in just the last 3 months

I've been a member for several years but don't post much. I have learned quite a lot on this site and found several very knowlegible people. I sent Josh my membership back in June but it still hasn't cleared my bank. I send out another check to you Josh. Thanks for the great site

Josh, my hopes for a speedy recovery for your Mom, and a big THANK YOU to you and the moderators. I do visit the site daily and want you to know that it is priceless! I am fairly new and do not post hardly at all because I am such a poor typist. However it is basicly elementary that respect and disipline are necessary for the site to run efficiently. As some of us have learned that for every action there will be a reaction. A fee for use of this board is not unreasonable OR out of line, as a matter of fact it would probably help weed out users that have less than positive intentions. And then again "ENTREPRENEURSHIP" is the American way, why not let the site help you as it has so many others! I know that all the info I have obtained is worth far more than the optional 25.00 fee, books and manuals have cost me probably 4 times that, plus the added benefit of first hand knowledge of untold secrets, the camaraderie, and access to probably one of the largest parts invetory out there. As for you dealing with the full plate that you have you have my sincerest respect and admiration, I don't think I would have enough hours in my day. THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO!!!!!! John

You probably do not need to speak with someone in similar shoes, but Steve who runs www.ck5.com, (a Chevy K5 site that has grown to cover much more than just K5's) has had similar issues with finiancing his board and has what appears to be a pretty good system working for his site. I would be happy to get his e-mail address for you if you wanted.
